Venezuelan Arepa Recipe

Ingredient list
- 2 cups: Arepa flour (precooked cornmeal)
- 2 teaspoons: Kosher salt
- 2 tablespoons: Vegetable oil
- Desired fillings: Such as shredded chicken or pork
- 1 or 2: Lime wedges
Prep
- prep time: 35 minutes
- tools: 1 nonstick skillet, medium bowl,
- serving size: 4 servings
Step by Step Directions
step 1: Combine arepa flour and salt in a medium bowl and add 2 1/2 cups of warm water
step 2: Stir until ingredients become dry
step 3: Let rest 5 minutes to hydrate
step 4: Knead dough a few times in the bowl and then divide into 8 pieces
step 5: Roll each piece on work surface into a ball and flatten to about 1/2" thick.
step 6: Heat 1 Tbsp. oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat 350°F
step 7: Add 4 arepas, cover, and cook until golden brown (6-8 minutes)
step 8: Uncover, flip, and cook until other side is golden brown (6-8 minutes)
step 9: Transfer arepas onto a wire rack and add remaining 1 Tbsp. oil and dough
step 10: Split arepas and stuff with desired fillings
step 11: Squeeze lime wedges over for taste
