The Grant House

1846 to 1901

The Grant House, built in 1846, is the oldest standing building on Officer’s Row. Ulysses S Grant never actually lived at the Grant House. He was however stationed at the Vancouver Barracks in the 1850’s as a quartermaster. The Grant House was being used as the commanding officer’s quarters and Grant often was a guest during his time as quartermaster. After his two terms as US President in 1879 Grant visited the Grant House and the Vancouver Barracks, the building was named the Grant House after his official visits.

Since 1961 the Grant House has been part of the National Historic site known as Fort Vancouver, however the Army still owned the property and it fell into disrepair. The buildings of Officer’s Row were left uninhabited and though a few tried to petition for the city of Vancouver to protect the landmark homes nothing was done until the 1980’s. Very little information is available online about the Officer’s Row between 1900 and 1980.

Visit the Clark County Historical Museum for more information. The Museum is located at 1511 Main Street, Vancouver WA. 98660.

Efforts to rehabilitate the Officer’s Row area began in the 1970’s. However really progress didn’t begin until 1980. After the Army declared the land was no longer needed in 1980 the process for returning the land to the city could begin. The City purchased the land from the Army for one dollar. Then began the 10.9-million-dollar rehabilitation. The buildings were inhabitable by 1988 after tremendous effort. Now the Officer's Row including the Grant House are a widely know tourist attraction.
