White America

Overview

White America is a social justice narrative told through the voice and visualization through children. The work offers a look inside the minds and daily lives of the stereotypes put on today's African American population in today's society.

Details

To make this video I used a poem written by my sister, and my brother as the visual representation of what she is talking about in the poem. The music is from Moby Gratis. Moby Gratis is a music website that offers free music to independent film makers and students. All my videos were shot on my phone with a tripod.

Conceptual Framework

Watching what my little brothers and sisters go through on a daily basis inspired me to tell their story. This poem was really important to my sister, and I thought I'd share it with others. It kind of just worked perfectly that she wrote a poem for one of her classes. One day we were watching TV when this commercial came on, and we really liked the feeling it gave us. That's when I got the idea to have her read her poem, and since its about our brother he agreed to be in it.

Artist Statement

The black lives matter movement is something that my brothers and sister supports to the fullest. And if its something that is important to them then I support it as well. This video reflects the feelings they have and have had in the past. With recent events it is important to remember that children are still effected by racism and effects their lives on a daily basis.

Self Reflection

I used Adobe Premiere Pro to edit my video. It was something very new to me and I had never worked with it before. I also learned music can bring feeling to the video when my poem was read over it. In the middle I would have liked a smoother transition into the all lives matter chant, but I couldn't get it to where I wanted. Also lighting at night was hard because I didn't have a camera. All of this was shot on my phone using a tripod, so if I were to do this different I would like a better camera. Overall I enjoyed making this project, and hope my siblings like it as well.
