Sight Unseen

It all began with a text

So there I was, enjoying a Friday night diligently doing my homework…actually I was watching Netflix, don’t judge me you marathoning bastards. ANYWAYS, that was when I randomly got a text from my best friend Chris.

What followed was a delima. See, he had been pestering me about what car he should get as he only had a motor cycle and summer was quickly turning into fall. He had been questioning a site called, www.BringATrailer.com that hosted cars for sale around the country.

It just so happened that on an impulse, Chris bought a car. There was just one problem. It was in Minnesota, which for him meant, “Road trip”.

He then propositioned me with the adventure the likes of which he knows I love since we have been partners in crime for over the past decade.

With class to attend and a test that coming Friday, I decided to do the responsible thing and tell him that I just couldn’t…

Pass this glorious opportunity up!
I mean, I hadn’t used a skip day…err, I mean makeup day, So I was clear there, the only thing I had to worry about was about getting back in time for may Friday morning test. Just a two day shotgun adventure going most of the way across the country for a car bought,

Sight Unseen

So then with a couple clicks we had tickets and a flight, woke up early and flew out with the wild abandonment of irresponsible children on an adventure...

After arriving in Minneapolis St.Paul, we were picked up by the seller and whisked away to see the car. Chris was nervous, but it was all that the seller had posted it to be.

And before he knew it, Chris had test drove and purchased a 2004 VW R32 Golf
One of only 1700 made and shipped to the US.

With all the formailites done and papers signed, the seller bid us farewell and we hit the open road, hoping to make a good chunk of the trip back before getting too tired.

But then not even 20 min down the road we had a scare...

**not my photo, just for reference**

An "alternator workshop" message started flashing intermittenly...

And then the car died, yes...died. Everything electronic just froze and we lost all power while driving and almost didnt make it to the side of the road where we then had to wait for a tow truck to take it to the shop to be repaired in the morning.

And like that I suddenly realized my gamble failed, the hopes of getting back by Friday morning had slipped out of reach, yet i pushed those dark thoughts out and focused on the tasks at hand...

  1. Drop car off at shop
  2. Get a hotel
  3. Get Drun...have a couple cold ones. *wink*

And thats what we proceeded to do...

Dropped the poor car off at the shop that its gone to since mile #1.

Found a classy hotel to stay in good ol' Hudson, WI for the night
The Royal Inn...(not so royal)

Can't you see Chris' overflowing happiness?

Then we proceeded to wash our worries away..til morning.

all away...

Why is beer so good...

The next morning
The trip finally re-begins.
The good people at rivercity autowerks
replaced the 217,000 original mile alternator that
went bad.

And so our 1800 mile trek began with Chris excited to finally drive the car, nervous about other things going wrong with his purchase, and not too happy about having to spend and extra $600 on the spot for repairs...

So we drove..

And drove...
Slept...
and drove...
(maybe a little too fast through Montana: Avg Speed 110mph)

Until we finally made it back late Friday night
(way too late for my test),
car running like a champ.

(hard to see: but that the Salmon creek exit)
