Siopao Recipe
Here’s a delicious recipe for making Siopao (steamed buns) with a flavorful meat filling:
Siopao Dough Ingredients:
- ○ 3 cups all-purpose flour
- ○ 1/4 cup sugar
- ○ 1 teaspoon salt
- ○ 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ○ 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
- ○ 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- ○ 1/2 teaspoon instant yeast
Meat Filling Ingredients:
- ○ 1 pound ground pork (or chicken)
- ○ 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- ○ 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- ○ 1 tablespoon sugar
- ○ 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- ○ 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ○ 1 small onion, finely chopped
- ○ 1/4 cup water
- ○ 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- Optional: diced hard-boiled eggs, chopped green onions, or mushrooms for added flavor
Instruction
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
- In a separate bowl, mix the warm water, vegetable oil, and instant yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until bubbly.
- Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-10 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Step 2: Prepare the Filling
- In a skillet, heat a little oil over medium heat. Sauté the minced garlic and chopped onion until fragrant.
- Add the ground pork and cook until browned.
- Stir in the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, sesame oil, black pepper, and water. Cook until the mixture is well combined and slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let it cool.
Step 3: Assemble the Siopao
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small balls (about the size of a golf ball).
- Flatten each ball into a round disc, about 4 inches in diameter.
- Place a spoonful of the meat filling in the center of each disc.
- Gather the edges of the disc and pinch them together to seal the filling inside. Make sure it’s tightly sealed.
- Place each bun on a piece of parchment paper and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
Step 4: Steam the Siopao
- Prepare a steamer over medium heat. Make sure to add water to the bottom.
- Once the water is boiling, carefully place the buns in the steamer, ensuring they have space to expand.
- Steam for about 15-20 minutes until the buns are fluffy and cooked through.
- Remove from the steamer and let them cool slightly before serving.
Enjoy!
Serve your Siopao warm, and enjoy the delightful combination of the soft bun and savory meat filling. You can dip them in soy sauce, vinegar, or your favorite sauce for an extra kick!
