My Favorite Places in South Africa

Intro

This website depicts some of my favorite places in South Africa. South Africa as a whole is a geographically diverse area, and each region offers it's own unique traits.

Johannesburg

Johannesburg

Johannesburg also known as "Jo'burg" or "Jozi" to locals, is one of the main bustling cities in South Africa. It's where a majority of my family is from and holds a dear place in my heart. It is a dichotomy of culture much like the whole South Africa in itself, and provides a deep richness of history. The area gained its wealth originally from gold and diamond mining. It has grown to be the third-largest city on the African continent, and the only one not near a major body of water. The country has eleven national languages, and the city mirrors that diversity to a T. Though English is the most common, Zulu, Afrikaans, and Xhosa are spoken along with others.

Muizenburg

Muizenburg

"Muizenburg (Dutch for "mice mountain") is known for being the Summer destination where shallow waters offer great family fun and a prime spot for surfing. But beyond the jam-packed beach front there is a lot of quirky qualities to the village itself. Book shops, bric-a-brac and eateries all reflect a home- grown culture that makes "Muizies" a one of a kind neighbourhood to enjoy all year round. As you enter the area, you can’t miss the colourful beach hunts that are dotted along the sand.

Hout Bay

Hout Bay

Hout Bay is small quirky town around 20 minutes away from the center of Cape Town. It was formerly a fishing village and has managed to maintain its unique combination of fishing harbour and country atmosphere. Its long, sandy beach faces a bay framed by mountains which is quite the spectacle to see. Capetonians (locals from Cape Town) throng here over weekends to partake of the local fish & chips and to catch a glimpse of the resident Cape seals that make the harbour their home.

Soweto

Soweto

Soweto is a small complex located in the province of Gauteng. There is a lot of history behind this area; originally the land was set aside by the South African white government for residency of black South Africans, it adjoins the city of Johannesburg on the southwest; its name is an acronym derived from South-Western Townships. As pictured above one of the distinctive landmarks of Soweto is the Orlando Towers. The towers are used for extreme sports such as bungee jumping, abseiling, zip-lining, and pendulum swinging.
