Daenerys and her brother, Viserys, are staying at the estate of Magister Illyrio Mopatis. She learns that she is being married off to Khal Drogo of the Dothraki in exchange for 40,000 men for Viserys to use to invade Westeros.
At her wedding to Khal Drogo, Magister Illyrio gives Daenerys three dragon eggs that he believes have been turned to stone through the passage of time. This is when she meets Sir Jorah Mormont, knight of Westeros. He gifts books and offers his service to Viserys.
The next day the Daenerys and Drogo's khalasar start their several month journey east to the Dothraki city, Vaes Dothrak.
CloseDuring the long journey, Daenerys servant, Doreah helps her learn how to use her sexuality to influence Drogo and become his equal. Irri, a Dothraki woman, teaches Daenerys the language and customs of her people.
Viserys feeling like he is losing his control over Daenerys and makes attempts to gain it back. He is thwarted by her men and forced to walk the rest of the journey.
Daenerys discovers she is pregnant and confidently predicts it will be a boy.
Once they reach the city Daenerys invites Viserys to dinner and provides him fresh clothes. He angrily strikes her for being provided clothes he believes are the "rags of savages". Daenerys fights back by hitting him with a heavy gold belt and warns him she will have his hands removed if he ever strikes her again.
As part of a Dothraki tradition, Daenerys eats the heart of a stallion before the eyes of the dosh khaleen, Dothraki wise women. She gives her son the name Rhaego and the wise women predict her son will be the "Stallion Who Mounts the World". He will unite all the Dothraki into a single horde and rule the world.
Furious that Daenerys has won the love of the Dothraki, Viserys tries to steal her dragon eggs to buy his own army. Ser Jorah stops him. Viserys then comes the the feast drunk and demands that Khal Drogo pay the price for Daenerys. If Drogo does not hold his end of the deal he threatens to take Daenerys back. Angered Drogo executes Viserys by pouring molten gold over his head.
Daenerys tries to convince Drogo to invade Westeros so their son could have the Iron Throne. He is disinterested until a wineseller attempts to poison Daenerys on King Robert Baratheons orders. After the assasination attempt Drogo swears he will seize the Seven Kingdoms.
In order to raise money for the ships to travel across the Narrow Sea, Drogo lead his khalasarinto Lhazar where they seize loot and slaves they can sell. Appalled by the treatment of the slaves especially the women, Daenerys wins them better treatment. Not happy with Drogo giving in to Daenerys one of the riders, Mago, challenges Drogo to combat. Drogo slays him but not before he sustains a chest wound.
After one of the woman Daenerys saves, Mirri Maz Duur, tends to Drogos wound the khalasar marches south. During this trip Drogos wound gets worse and he falls from his horse, which the Dothraki view as weakness. Daenerys asks Mirri Duur to treat him but is informed the wound is fatal. In a desperate attempt to save his life Daenerys asks Mirri to use magic, which is forbidden in the Dothraki culture. Angered, one of the riders tries to intervene but Ser Jorah kills him. During this altercation Daenerys is injured and goes into labor. Jorah takes Daenerys to be treated by Mirri and the khalasarseparate.
Daenerys comes to find out that her baby was stillborn and deformed. Mirri used the babies death as a power source to save Drogo but intentionally leaves him in a vegetative state as payback for raiding her village. Distraught, Daenerys forces herself to accept Drogo will never be alive fully smothers him with a pillow. She constructs a funeral prye for his body where she places her dragon eggs and ties Mirri onto it.
Before stepping into the flames Daenerys addresses the remaining khalasar, telling them they are free to go but if they stay she will lead them to a great destiny. The next morning reveals she survived and now has three newly-hatched dragons.
CloseDaenerys sends her three bloodriders in three separate directions in the effort to find shelter. Only one of the three, Kovarro, returns with an invitation from Qarth.
Upon arriving in Qarth, Daenerys is refused entry by the ruling council, the Thirteen, until she shows them her dragons. She refuses. However, the Qartheen dignitary, Xaro Xhoan Daxos, vouches for her and takes her into his home. He holds a reception for her where she meets Pyat Pree of the Warlocks of Qarth. Pyat demostrates his magic by replicating himself and invites her to the House of the Undying.
Xaro offers to fund Daenerys return to Westeros in exchange for her hand in marriage. She is eager to accept the offer once he tells her of King Robert Baratheon's death. Ser Jorah advices her against seizing the opportunity and she agrees.
Daenerys tries to appeal to the Thirteen of Qarth but is unsuccessful. She returns to Xaro's home to find her dragons missing and members of her khalasar murdered. The meeting following she learns that Pyat Pree stole her dragons and invites her to the House of the Undying.
Daenerys goes to rescue her dragons and gets separated from her guards in the process. She is confronted with visions of her lost family but is able to overcome them and finds herself captive by Pyat Pree. He plans to keep her and her dragons because they increase his powers. Using the fire breathing command she taught them her dragons burn Pyat, allowing her to escape with her dragons.
Returning to Xaro's home she finds him in bed with Doreah. Knowing she has been betrayed she takes them to Xaro's vault and learns it is empty. Daenerys locks them in to perish and she salvages enough valuables to buy a ship.
CloseDaenerys travels to Astapor on her newly acquired ship to acquire the elite warriors, the Unsullied. She is given a tour of the Unsullied barracks by their owner, Kraznys mo Nakloz. Daenerys is outraged by how the Unsullied are trained and treated. Nakloz informs her that eight thousand soldiers are for sale.
While walking back to her ship, Ser Jorah advises that she buy all the Unsullied, stating they will have a better quality of life. She is almost killed by a manticore hidden in a ball given to her by a child. Ser Barristan Selmy saves her by stabbing the manticore and identifies himself as one of her father's Kingsguard. He offers to serve her, in which she accepts.
She begins negotiations with Kraznys for the eight thousand Unsullied soldiers, including the ones in training. Initially he dismisses her only offering her one hundred soldiers, in which she responds that she will sell one of her dragons. Kraznys accepts her offer of her biggest dragon, Drogon, in exchange for the Unsullied and his slave girl,Missandei.
On the day of the exchange Daenerys gives Kraznys Drogon's chain in return for the golden whip that symbolizes control over the Unsullied. Shocking everyone by speaking Valyrian, Daenerys orders the Unsullied to kill all the slave masters and free all the slaves. She also orders Drogon to burn Kraznys.
After she conquers Astapor she informs all the Unsullied warriors that they are free men and allows them the choice to leave unharmed or fight under her command as free men. After a few moments of silence one of the Unsullied soldiers beats his spear on the ground to show his allegiance to her, the rest of the Unsullied follow.

Daenerys is adament about freeing the slaves of Yunkai but Ser Jorah cautions her against it. Claiming that the defenders of the city will resort to guerrilla tactics against her army.
In a meeting with one of the ruling masters of Yunkai, Razdal mo Eraz,Daenerys is unfazed by his attempts to disuade her from conquering his city. She claims the fight would give her Unsullied much need practice. He attempts to bribe her with gold and ships, in which she counter offers with she will spare his life and the slave masters if he sets every slave free. Also threatening to show no mercy if rejected. Razdal offended by Daenerys demands and her dragons threatening him, he in turn threatens her by claiming to use Yunkai's "powerful friends" to destroy her.
After learning that Yunkai's "powerful friends" are the Second Sons. She meets with the Captains, Mero and Prendahl na Ghezn, and Prendahl's underling Daario Naharis. They refuse her alliance on the grounds they will not be rewarded till she reclaims the Iron Throne. She gives them two days to make a decision.
Later while taking a bath, Daario, disguised as an Unsullied holds a knife to Missandei's throat advising the women not to scream. He reveals himself and tells them that his captains wanted to kill Daenerys. He disagreed and beheaded them, swearing alligence to Daenerys.
With Daario's help Daenerys is able to capture Yunkai. The morning following the capture, Daenerys addresses the slaves. She lets them know that it was their choice to reach for their freedom.
CloseOn her way to the city of Meereen, Daenerys discovers a slave child nailed to a cross pointing the way to Meereen. There is one child for every mile to Meereen, 163 in total. She orders that each child have their collars removed and properly buried after she looks on each ones face.
Upon arriving to Meereen she is faced with a champions duel with one of Meereen's knights. Daario volunteers as her champion, quickly slaying the Meereen knight. To show her previous success to the slaves of Meereen she catapults the broken chains of those she has freed. Not long after she sends Grey Worm in to the city to start a revolt. She is successful and the slaves rise up, killing some of their masters and allowing Daenerys to enter the city.
Later, she meets with her advisors and learns that her previous cities have either been returned to slavery or conquered by someone else. She starts to question whether she can rule the Seven Kingdoms if she cannot even keep Slaver's Bay pacified. As a result, she chooses to stay in Meereen to gain more knowledge and experience.
Daenerys rule in Meereen has a lot of ups and downs. She takes meetings with her new subjects in order to gain the knowledge and experience she seeks. She sends the Second Sons to take back Yunkai from the slave masters, with the proposition that they either live in her new world or die in their old world.
Ser Barristan Selmy informes Daenerys that Ser Jorah has been spying on her. Outraged by his betrayl she banishes him from Meereen.
Some time later, Daenerys meets with a shepherd who distraughtly shows her the charred remains of his 3-year old daughter. Realizing she no longer has control of her dragons, she sadly locks Rahegal and Viserion in the catacombs below the city. Drogon is no where to be found.
Tensions start to escalate in Meereen as those known as the, Sons of the Harpy, start killing and causing problems. They oppose Daenerys rule on Meereen. Daario and Grey Worm capture one of the Sons of the Harpy. After being counciled not to be like her father, Daenerys spares the man's life till after he receives a fair trial. A former slave decides to take matters into his own hands and kills the harpy. To show that she believes in freedom and justice, she has the former slave executed for his crime. A riot starts during the execution between former slaves and masters forcing Daenerys to flee.
A former slave masters pleads with Daenerys to reopen the fighting pits, claiming it was enjoyed by all. At first she refuses but after later reconsiders.
At the fighting pit, Daenerys is visible disturbed by what she sees. Before she leaves she notices a fighter using non-lethal means. Once the fight is over the fighter reveals himself to be Ser Jorah and tell Daenerys he has brought her a gift.The gift being Tyrion Lannister. She meets with Tyrion privately and after talking she allows him to advise her on ruling matters.
Later, at the pits again. A Son of the Harpy tries to kill Daario but is stopped by Jorah. This causes all the Harpies to reveal themselves and they start killing former slave masters and freemen. Daenerys attempts to flee but becomes surrounded in the middle of the area. Drogon suddenly appears to protect her. After taking a few spears, Daenerys climbs on his back to flee to safety.
