What We Are
STEMagination™ is a nonprofit organization set up to help fund STEM experiences for girls and young women. We envision equal representation of girls and women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) courses and career fields.
What We Do
Our mission is to Encourage, Engage and Empower girls and young women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by providing hands-on, female-mentored, STEM experiences.
Why We Do What We Do
According to the U.S. Census Bureau women make up 48% of the workforce, but only 26% of the STEM workforce. Although the proportion of women in the STEM workforce is growing, the percent of women going into technology is going down, and engineering is remaining stagnant. Why is this a problem? “Women aren’t setting the agenda and designing products and services that are shaping our lives (Kaufman 2013).” This sentiment is echoed by Toni Barstis from Saint Mary’s College, “If women don’t go into this field, they will be left out of technological advances, the design process, innovation process and higher paying jobs…A whole group of women is going to lose their voice and get left behind (Associated Press, 2010).”
Colleges like Saint Mary’s and Harvey Mudd are fighting this trend by adapting their technology and engineering programs to attract more female students. STEMagination™ is fighting the trend by following research proven strategies (Fancsali) to improve girls’ self confidence and interest in STEM by providing hands-on activities, female mentoring, and single-sex collaboration.
