Hour of Code for Computer Science Education Week, December 9-15, 2013
A one hour introduction to computer science. Anyone can learn the basics of “coding”!
Young Ladies’ Engineering Day for National Engineers Week, February 16-22, 2014
4th-5th grade girls will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of engineering activities with female engineer mentors.
SCRATCH Camps (Beginner and Intermediate) June 2014
4th-8th grade girls will have the opportunity to learn how to code using SCRATCH, a programming language developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at MIT. Girls learn to code, create games, create animations and meet new friends.
Girls Lead the Way Camps (Beginner and Intermediate) August 2014
Run through Vancouver Public Schools.
Beginner camp: girls learn about basic electronics, learn to solder, create a hydraulic arm, and learn basic programming of a robot.
Intermediate camp: girls learn more advanced programming with Arduino and build a robot.
Our girls from the past two Girls Lead the Way camps and our beta test SCRATCH camp represented us well at this year’s Portland Mini Maker Faire. We were able to introduce hundreds of young people to the fun and excitement of engineering, robotics and coding, by showing off our hydraulic arms, demonstrating how to program robots and Arduinos, and showing off our programs made in SCRATCH.
SCRATCH Camp (beta test) This past summer STEMagination™ held a beta test of SCRATCH Camp for 4th through 8th grade girls. The camp teaches girls to code using SCRATCH, allowing girls to create animations and games. We plan to have a full blown SCRATCH Camp during the summer of 2014.
