My final project is a short documentary on my aunt Terri Shanahan. She is an interior designer, artist, blogger, and a huge inspiration to me both creatively and personally. I ran into a few problems during the production of this. My battery died so I wasn’t able to get all the footage I had planned. Finding creative angles in small spaces along with lighting and audio was also a challenge. Once I knew what to cut and what to include the narrative came together and worked better for me. I was forced to find workarounds since I wasn’t able to get all the footage I had originally planned.
I chose Dreaming Methods (and unfortunately I was not able to locate the author’s name.) to analyze hyper-cinema. This interactive narrative was a compelling experience. From the very beginning, the viewer can follow the story with many visual clues. They use cinema language within this narrative by considering lighting, sound, and images. The beginning starts within a confusing, dark and centered image. The music sets the stage for an eerie interactive experience. The music fit perfectly. The small image is centered and surrounded by black; the lighting was well thought out as well. The text was small and provide a point-and-click feature. The text allows for interaction between the user and the video. The story goes on in the direction the user selects. The viewer can choose any area within the flash to tell the story where to go next. Each room provides another layer to the narrative.
I found this an exciting way to tell a story and allow the viewer to use their imagination as they click around the room. Remediation and appropriation of content were used to create this experience by layering mediums such as stills, text, and sound.

Read the article about SKAM and then skim around the Facebook video series. What are your thoughts about a networked “tv” series or “webisode” with social media interaction with the audience? What ideas do you have for such a networked interactive series?
The idea of SKAM is captivating and something uniquely new to me. Until this blog post, I hadn’t known it existed. I think that the concept of integrating social media with a networked “tv” series or “webisode” is innovative and a brilliant way to reach a targeted generation. This form of media allows the audience to have an immersive experience, allows the viewers to engage with the story and characters, and holds their attention.
While the SKAM series used as the example for this blog post was captivating, It is targeted towards a younger age group with high school age characters. I think an exciting series would be a middle age person inheriting an old family home. The home would be a large old house, on a property. The woman would discover many stories within the walls through old letters, photographs may be even a journal. The stories would be about the people who once lived within the walls of this old plantation. She would learn about her ancestors as well as herself.
I enjoyed learning about this media and may explore this later with a project. In digital storytelling, we did a project where we had to tell a story through a social media platform. I used Instagram as my platform; however, I think a Facebook platform could be exciting.

To create a successful essay, some things need to be kept in mind such as essays need to be short, they need to be interesting, and they should be truthful. Essays are a series of thoughts. The use of language with an image can be useful to guide us through the narrative, create an emotional moment or even to inform us about what’s happening within the scene; however, there are essential elements to consider when creating an essay. The use of images, sounds, and words and how these elements work together need to be considered. When they are used together successfully, they set the emotion to your story or help the viewer to understand what is taking place.
Voice-Over, text, sound, graphics, and video can be combined to explore an idea or make an argument by recognizing what elements to use and when to use them. Consider voice-over along with film footage; if done right it can create the emotion allowing the message to communicate with more then the dialog. It can set the mood or set the scene. People need to feel the emotion, or they do not believe it. Knowing how much time to give emotion and allowing the moment to happen. Understanding that even seconds can make a big difference.
How I would begin writing an essay would be, begin with, a general topic. I would shoot all my footage listing to my instincts, allowing my interview to talk without interruption. I would be sure to guide the conversation when needed however allowing time for real emotion. While editing, I would allow the story to unfold by itself. I often find if I try to force something or not allow my topic to evolve it falls flat or isn’t as successful.

My subject is creativity. I plan to use my aunt who is an artist, interior designer.

I will need a zoom recorder which I have already set up with Dene and Greg to use over Thanksgiving break.

After reading Lev Manovich’s “What is Digital Cinema,” it was easy to recognize how hybrid cinema is used often in today’s production industry. Manovich details in our reading, “Special effects, which involved human intervention into the machine-recorded footage and which were therefore delegated to cinema’s periphery throughout its history, become the norm of digital filmmaking” (9). In the Light is Waiting, it is recognizable in the use of special effects in the editing as well as in the digital experience.
Director Michael Robinson used various special effects techniques to turn an ordinary scene into something creative and innovative. He takes a familiar scene of Full house’s DJ, and Kimmy, accidentally dropping a television and uses this to lead into something else entirely. The static white noise creates confusion to simulate the damaged television. This then creates a linear narrative from a boat at sea to a waterfall and so one. Robinson utilized digitized live-action footage as well as loops and then divides the screen in a kaleidoscope effect. Space is no longer cinematic, but a new creation that hardly mirrors its beginning, and it creates a whole nother digital experience.

Possible narrative uses for loops are the continuity of the actions. They create a feeling of infinity and continuity. Loops can also be used in film(s) to communicate time or change. An example would be the changing of seasons or the 12-hour clock.

I have read this visual essay in a few courses and have found it interesting how it can apply to many mediums. Scott McCloud’s chapter on “Time Frames,” in Understanding Comics, the idea of managing the passage of time, and creating the illusion of separate stories was a great reminder that while the periods in between frames and the operations within a scene can be manipulated to make time seem to move faster, the dialog itself can not.
What the viewer understands depends on what the viewer’s interpretation is. This can be applied to almost any medium. We associate many details and interpret them depending on our past experiences are. This is also helpful in creating the emotional connection to the characters and the narrative.

The sequence is held together initially with the quietness of this scene. The crisp, sharp black and white create an emotional layer to this film. The scene begins with the main characters, Jewish survivors and the man responsible for their murders looking for the grave of their lost family. The long shot / establishing shot as they cross the field into the forest creates a feeling of cold and dread. As the murderer digs up the grave of Ida and her aunts family we see it from a high angle. The man in the hole, small and emotional, broken. The sequence is meant to convey the struggle with the death of their loved ones. The Aunts loss of a child as she sits on her knees while Ida does not know where she came from and we only see her from the waist down each struggle with internal battles. The last sce]ne is of the Aunt walking away holding what is left of her child, the man in the grave, Ida still looking into the grave. This created a feeling of grief, guilt, and sadness.

“Pocket Cinema” in the twenty-first century has created a way for anyone with a smartphone, a little knowledge of storytelling and composition to create a video. The convenience of filmmaking is now in the hands of anyone with a smartphone. “Pocket Cinema” is changing how people perceive film(s). Cinema is not just something made in Hollywood. The convenience of smartphones has changed opened up a whole new way of creating the video. The average person with a little understanding of storytelling and armed with their phone can now create short films with minimal cost. Unlike Hollywood whose, large budgets consist of camera crews, experts and directors which can be very expensive.
The idea of everyone being their personnel cameraman is interesting. Sarah Atkinson describes how mobile devices are changing the medium. “How your smartphone is changing cinema” She goes on to discuss new tech that enables filmmakers to experiment on their phones using lenses, apps, adaptors and apps made for their devices. This technology has allowed filmmakers to create intimate shots that can only be done using a smaller device.
Some advantages, in pockets cinema, is a change in the way movies are made today. Mobile devices create ease and are readily available with HD video. Many have a phone at their fingertips where ever they go. Most can use their ideas and devices to share their video on various platforms simply anywhere they choose. Platforms such as YouTube have flourished with the use of these devices and through individuals creating and distributing content on these platforms. Blogging/vlogging has grown from a hobby to a from professional filmmaking.

A documentary on Eagle Creek fire would undoubtedly be an exciting topic and project. Undoubtedly a tragedy, I would want my focus to be on the young man who caused this tragic event. There is plenty of available footage from the fire; it was covered extensively by the news and onlookers posting all over social media. The reason I would want to focus on the kids responsible for the fires is to show a different side of an event most of us know.
I would include interviews with the family members, friends, and peers of these kids. Not focusing on just the kid who was found guilty but the group of kids whom all had a part in this event. I would hope to show his remorse or lack of. Add an emotional way to connect with the kid who is hated by so many. This angle would highlight the fact he is everyone’s child who made an awful mistake.
Interviews would also include the towns, people and firefighters whom all were affected as well as the people who loved to hike in this beautiful area. Focusing on peer pressure, mob mentality and trying to humanize this awful situation. I would spend time gathering existing footage of Eagle creek before and after. I would hope to be able to show the rebirth of the burned areas. GAthering plenty of B roll footage.

Blog: What are some of the cinema and narrative techniques used in the movie “Run Lola Run” (1991)? In what ways can this movie be said to have a digital aesthetic as discussed in the readings from Nicholas Rombes’ Cinema in the Digital Age.” How is the narrative space – the spatial and temporal arrangement of story elements – different from most conventional movie narratives? How are specific techniques similar to the Classical Hollywood style? How is time manipulated, stretched and compressed? How is a sense of narrative continuity and order maintained with all the jumps in time and space? Please quote from the readings!
In Run Lola Run, the editing makes use of nonlinear storytelling, match on action and temporal montage. Throughout the narrative, we watch all the different outcomes to many situations Lola encounters. Even with all the montage of scenes, there is an order which is maintained. The fast-paced storytelling is summed up in quick scenes and jump cuts. Although at time chaotic the editing helps to make sense of the narrative. “the several different versions of the same event tell the story not only of Lola and her boyfriend Manni, but of the process of nonlinear editing itself, whereby shots and sequences are pieced together in potentially endless configurations, each one telling a slightly (or drastically) different story.” (p.130)
Throughout the film, time jumps from one time to another with different outcomes in each scenario. By using Chaos Theory’s “Butterfly Effect”. The first scene always begins with the red phone ringing, and the next scene unfolds. Something else I found interesting is the use of the color red. Anything the story wants us to take notice in it uses the color red. Lola’s hair, the death scene, the phone, etc. It appears to deliberate and its fun to take note. This is not typical of most Hollywood films as time usually develops a linear composition, however, Run Lola Run uses similar editing techniques like the classic Hollywood style with continuity editing

For my continuity video, I wanted to focus more on the shots, the angles, and the flow of the story. I decided to shot something in my day to day life. Since I had to be at the gym any way I thought this was a good story to share.
There are things that worked well and offered interesting angles and things I would have done differently. One thought is to take a few establishing shots in case something didn’t work well for me such as the panning in the beginning. It wasn’t smooth enough as I would have liked and had I shot this on a tripod without the panning I believe I would have liked that better. Overall this was a good learning experience.

I created a narrative based on the humor we find in our pets. Roxxy is an old golden retriever we rescued a few years ago. She loves to eat and sometimes it is too big of a temptation! My goal was to create a Who Dunnit without showing it taking place but instead leave it up to the viewer’s imagination.

My name is Anne, and I am a DTC major. I have a background in graphic and web design and am a freelancer in this area. My “superpower” is design, and I love all things creative.
I currently have a working internship as a social media manager, and one of my jobs includes video editing. I feel like I can fumble through ok but need to work on my editing skills. I took a premiere video class at Clark and loved it but thought I barely scratched the surface.
I am looking forward to learning all I can in this course.
One of my favorite films is IDA by Pawel Pawlikowski. It is a perfect example of the use of sharp, gorgeous black and white images. It allows the story to be told in a calm, beautiful way relying on the frames and cinematography just as much as the story itself. Truly stunning.
On the one side, the vastness, emptiness and otherworldly landscape of Iceland with its almost 24 hours-daylight in summer, on the other, a modern city full of life, history and exceptional architecture. I appreciate the angles and shots as much as the story of their visit.
