Animal Crossing was first released in Japan for the Nintendo 64 on April 14, 2001. After enhancing some features, the game was released on GameCube the same year. This version was released in North America on September 16, 2002, Australia on October 17, 2003, and Europe on September 24, 2004.

    Wild World

After the first release gained success, Nintendo released Animal Crossing: Wild World, known in Japan as Animal Forest: Come on Over. It was released on the Nintendo DS on November 23, 2005 in Japan and December 5, 2005 in the United States. It was later released on the Wii U in 2016. There were many changes and improvements to the game with Wild World's release. Players were able to partake in activities such as buying and selling items, going fishing, and becoming friends with the other villagers. The game is also played in real time.

    City Folk

Following Wild World, Animal Crossing: City Folk was released on the Wii console on November 16, 2008 in North America and November 20th of the same year in Japan. This game starts with an introduction to Rover on a bus which takes the player to the town the villager will live. What makes City Folk special is that there is a new attraction: the City. The player can take the bus and go to the City which includes new shops and attractions. There are introductions of new characters such as Gracie, a shop owner, Redd, a suspicious fox who sells art, Dr Shrunk who acts in the marquee, and Lyle who reviews homes. The town can finally hold 6-10 people.

    New Leaf

Animal Crossing New Leaf was released on the 3DS on November 8, 2012 in Japan and June 9, 2013 in the United States. Unlike the previous series of the Animal Crossing franchise, this game starts with the player taking on the role of mayor in the town. New Leaf introduces Isabelle who helps the player throughout the game. The town is more easily customizable in New Leaf and the player can choose which town to live in, as well as the house location. Many new buildings are available in New Leaf. The Re-Tail is a recycling store that buys items for a higher price. The Roost is a coffee shop finally separate from museum, and the player can work part time. The main street replaces the City in New Leaf, Club LOL replaces Dr. Shrunk's marquee, and Lyle works for Nook's Homes. Gracie's fashion shop becomes available when completing tasks. Not only that, there are more villager species introduced in New Leaf.

    New Horizons

New Horizons was released on March 20, 2020 on the Nintendo Switch console. Unlike previous games where the player lives in a town, the player can now live on an island. This game starts off with an introduction to new characters who run Dodo Airlines. They ask the player information about themselves and the player is able to choose which island they want to inhabit. There are several new additions seen in New Horizons. Instead of traveling on the bus, players are allowed to fly on Dodo Airlines to new islands by obtaining new currency called Nook Mile Tickets. Also, players obtain furniture for the island by crafting, and they can obtain materials like wood and tree branches to craft. The player is given a NookPhone that includes apps to obtain Nook miles, change passport, and to look at which critters you caught. Activities such as cooking and diving were added as updates to the game.
