In the summer of 2018, I spent 1 month in Ireland working on a snail farm. The images below represent a very abbreviated photo-documentary of my experience collecting and incubating snail eggs.
My goal with this project was to use multi-modality to teach the reader/viewer about the basic breeding process and anatomy of the common garden snail. With the use of hypertext, digital typography, photography, vector illustration, animation, video, a pleasing color pallet, and a little bit of comedy, it is my hope that you will learn and be entertained at the same time. The data used to create the video and infographic below was collected through my first-hand experience working on the snail farm. All photographs are my property and all graphics were created by me. Sound effect attributions are listed below the video.
While creating this video it occurred to me that the information I intended to communicate would have increased potency and a more lasting effect due to the fact that I am using animation (as opposed to a static comic strip or singular infographic). The video creates a nearly effortless experience for the viewer (apart from clicking the play button). Furthermore, the style of animation, sound effects, and general adorable factor of the animated snails are an attempt to connect with the viewer on an emotional level. Without the use of audio and animation this connection would be virtually impossible.
