The story behind the Hyperadapt 1.0 goes way back. In the movie, Back to the Future, Nike designed a pair of shoes for the main character, Marty McFly. In this movie, Nike created the shoe called the "Nike Air Mag". What was so special about these shoes is that in the movie they gave the illusion that they could light up with colors and they self laced. Marty McFly encounters these in the movie when they time travel to the year 2016. Behind the idea of this design was the one and only Tinker Hatfield.
With the movie taking place in 2016, Tinker and his design group were actually able to successfully make the "Nike Air Mag" shoe that self laced and released only 100 pairs of these for charity. Now that they were able to design a functioning shoe that self laced, Tinker decided to take it one step further. With the technology that he and his team created called E.A.R.L. (Electro Adaptive Reactive Lacing), they were able to create a shoe that anyone could wear. This shoe is Tinker's latest design and quite possibly his biggest one yet. On December 17, 2016, the Hyperadapt was available for select people.
The Hyperadapt 1.0 is a ground breaking. With a $720 price tag and none available on the market, if you really wanted a pair you would have to pay upwards of $2000. Tinker feels like this design can be used for more than just the regular athlete, but for those who suffer with disabilities as well.
