Skywind is a volunteer-developed total recreation modification for the role-playing video game, The Elder Scrolls (TES) V: Skyrim (2011), remaking TES III: Morrowind (2002) in its engine.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind releases 2002Morrowind port to TES IV: Oblivion (2006) is born after modder Galadrielle announces an application that can convert Morrowind files to Oblivion-compatible files. Aptly named Morroblivion, it gets a website in 2008, created by Z. Graham. The first release is published by modders D. Budreck, Eloth, and Yoshimo in 2010, with a voice casting effort established in 2011 which becomes the foundation for Skywind's eventual voice acting department.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim releases 2011Soon after, members from Morroblivion begin to port content into Skyrim, and are able to dive right in after Skyrim's dedicated toolkit, the Creation Kit, is released Feb. 2012.
A few months later, modders in the Morroblivion forums come to a consenus on a name, and Skywind was chosen, followed by the creation of its own forum. 2013 sees the first public alpha release of Skywind, followed by its last several months later.
Skywind joins Morroblivion and Skyblivion (sister project remaking Oblivion in Skyrim) under the banner "The Elder Scrolls Renewal Project", but goes dark after ongoing duplicate public reports and requests and is removed from public download.
Skywind "Resurrection"Sometime in 2014, contributors come to a consensus that porting assets into Skyrim isn't enough to really rejuvinate Morrowind. In order to meet modern standards, all assets, acting quality, level design, and more would need to raise the bar. Skywind gets its own YouTube channel in July, 2014.
Application processes are established. In early 2016, Skywind contributors migrate over to Discord, which will become both a developer and community server. The last blog post is written New Year's Eve of 2016, thus curtailing the use of the Morroblivion forums. Cave and Dwemer level assets are completed, allowing for the first work on dungeons to begin.
Skywind production picks up paceExtensive work on multiple regions begin to take shape, amidst a weather overhaul. 2018 sees the implementation of various Morrowind-style mechanics, such as Classes, Alchemy, Disposition, and more. Skywind's OST releases to Bandcamp in April, 2018, composed by Fredrik Jonasson.
Call to the East" trailer is launchedJuly 2019, Skywind's new website launches alongside "Call of the East" trailer on YouTube.
Influx of volunteers since trailer launch2020 was a great year for an influx of new recruits in each department, and as such, production ramped up. Ancestral tombs begin development, more voice lines are implemented thanks to more VAs and VA processors, and composer Marius Schlichting completes the ambient soundtrack. 2D concept art sees the biggest boost in production, including the start of the book overhaul. The start of Vivec City overhaul begins in late 2020.
2021 sees Ashlander camps and ancestral tombs get finalized, magic overhaul begins, as well as animations for it and other rigs and assets. The book overhaul sees completion, as well as most of the 2D concept art department's remaining tasks. 3D and coding departments break barriers by implementing the armor system seen in Morrowind, as well as adding throwing weapon functionality. 2021 was the first year of the Creation Mod Con (CMC), where the major Skyrim modding projects collaborated to host an online event.
Looking to the futureSo far in 2022, the Vivec City overhaul nears completion, the Daedric Ruin tileset is complete and in-game, and Skywind looks forward to celebrating Morrowind's 20th anniversary with the release of <redacted> and interviews of members Zix and TwoBitMatt, by Danae, a prominent member of Morrowind's community.
