The Long Fall
'The most famous climber left on the mountain was George Mallory. In 1924, while attempting to be the first to reach the summit, he fell to his death.
Mallory wasn’t found until 1999, when he was located face down in a pile of shale with his arms spread out, with tanned skin from 75 years of exposure. He was discovered with tattered rope around his waist, confirming a hypothesis that Mallory’s climbing rope had failed. He also had a golf ball sized hole in his forehead, meaning he had probably hit his head hard on the way down.'
