Few creatures are as well feared in the underdark as Viata’s Child, Nasre. There’s legends among the Duergar of this creature. Almost like sailor stories, travelers will talk of the time they turned a corner in the Underdark and saw this huge beast release a consistent, blinding and paralyzing beam of sunlight upon another creature while its tail seems to suction onto their prey, injecting a quick acting venom.
Nasre was created by Viata, and for eons was her favored creation- staying by her side and doing deeds as she needed. While Nasre may seem to be a beast, they are rather intelligent, and acted on their own accord for power more than once. However, Nasre was not created as god- instead they achieved that power through a trade: when Azrael, god of the Afterlife, wanted to create beings in his image (the Tieflings), he needed more denizens in the Underworld to sap power from. To achieve this, he offered a deal: if Maelara, the soon-to-be mother of Helke, could be cursed to give birth to a god of death rather than life, then Nasre would be granted godhood. Thus, Nasre cursed Maelara, and Helke became Helke’zhar. For this crime, Soare attempted to destroy Nasre, but Nasre was unaffected, instead taking that light as a power of their own. Thus, instead, Juxos forged a prison deep beneath the earth for Nasre, and they were trapped within the Underdark since.
While Nasre is a beast, and is prone to violence, there are many followers of Nasre who believe they can be benevolent. Thus, in the underdark, Nasre can be both a god worshiped out of fear, and for guidance. It’s typical to offer some sort of bioluminescent fungi to Nasre (common in the Underdark) during prayer. Their symbol is a small cluster of fungi.
