Scientific Name
The scientific name for snow leopards is "pathera uncia." On a side note, other names they are known as are "ghosts of the mountains" or "mountain ghosts."
Fur
Snow leopards have thick fur in shades of gray or creamy yellow, covered in grayish black spots. They have the densest fur of all big cats that allows them to endure temperatures as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Size
Snow leopards can weigh between 60 to 120 pounds. They can get 4 to 5 feet long and an additional 36 inches if including their tail. Their tails can grow up to 90% of their body.
Location
Snow leopards live in high mountain ranges in Central Asia. This feline inhabits the highest altitude of any other big cat. Altitudes include up to 20,000 feet.
Voice
Snow leopards cannot roar. Instead, they have a piercing yowl that can be heard over the loud sounds of a river.
Movement
Snow leopards can leap up to 50 feet. Their large paws act as snowshoes that allow them to walk ontop of snow without falling in.
Comparison
Snow leopards are more similar to tigers than other leopards.
Diet
Snow leopards prey on blue sheep, also known as bharal. Other prey consists of marmots, hares, and game birds.
