For our assignment, we were tasked with making a narrative project using HTML, CSS, and possibly Javascript. It needed to include text, stylings, and obviously the narrative content.
I wanted to make a project that carries with it the somber notion that workers, especially those in dangerous jobs (such as miners) have to toil away, putting themselves at risk while those they work for get rich off of their misfortune and possible death in the name of profit for some unseen entity.
It was a lot of fun to get the background all set up as it's just multiple chunks of looping tiles. The main backdrop has the dirt and the track, while an overlay of the sides sits on top to make sure that the lantern looks good. The header also has extra chunks on top of it, such as the bar, though the background is changed to add the grass. You can actually notice just where the background loops if you look at the top of this darkened section, that's the edge of one chunk and where another chunk starts!
Visually, I wanted everything to match the cart that acts as the navigation menu. Once I had that mine theme, I made the narrative around it.
It was a bit of a challenge getting Skrollr to work correctly, but once I got a hang of it, it was just smooth sailing from there. It was also challenging to make everything look good, but I think the final product turned out great considering I made the background in 2D using Clip Studio, made an untextured cart in Blender, and then threw textures in a 2D plane over the cart back in Clip Studio.
Overall, the project was a blast to get done and really let me flex some creative muscles in the design aspects of it. In the future, I want to try spending more time with scripts as they seem really fun and world changing with HTML!
