Omori is described as a psychological horror game published in 2020 by Omocat. The game centers on a character named Sunny, and his friends Kel, Hero, Aubrey, Basil, along with his sister Mari. The game starts off in White Space, seen as an empty realm which transitions from reality into Headspace. Headspace is a dream-like world which Sunny uses as an escape from reality. Once in Headspace, the player is introduced to Omori (who represents the past version of Sunny) along with his friends Kel, Hero, and Aubrey. The game explores the topics of fear, trauma, depression, and suicide--and the challenges that come along with it.

Explanation of trauma

Headspace is a place which stems from the traumatic event of Sunnys past. The death of his sister Mari has led both him and his friend Basil to experience life haunted with the mistakes of their past. While Mari's death affected their whole friend group, the immediate ties that Sunny and Basil had to the incident hold a much higher importance to the story. This is shown through the ending of the game, while being lightly hinted to throughout. Flashing back to before the incident, Sunny and the group used to live happily alongside eachother--as seen through his memory of his friends in Headspace. For Sunny's 12th birthday, he was gifted a violin from his friends. Later on he begins practicing with Mari (who plays piano) for a recital. One night, Sunny ends up smashing the violin out of frustration. He soon meets Mari at the top of the stairs and an argument breaks out. In the stress of the moment, Sunny ends up shoving Mari who then tumbles down the stairs landing on Sunny's broken violin. Sunny then pulls her upstairs and lays her down on a bed, breaking down into tears. Basil, who was in the house at the time, witnessed the entire event. Him and Sunny set her death up as a suicide, as they feel that is the only way to go about the situation. This haunts them from the time it occured all through the 4 years reaching current time.

Headspace

Omori often flees reality to explore his mind of memories. We start in a room with our friends which resembles Sunny and Mari's old treehouse. We leave that room by climbing some stairs and exiting out of a stump (resembling the tree stump in their backyard). There are many connections between the town that Sunny lives in and Headspace such as the playground. He's created characters in his mind which in some way resemble people he knew growing up. While this space is packed with silly locations and fun characters, it goes much deeper than that. As time goes on, traumatic imagery and flashbacks appear briefly in his mind. Omori/Sunny is often faced with his fears, learning how to confront them. Omori slowly blocks Basil out of Headspace. The entirety of this segment sends Omori and his friends on the search for their friend. As the truth of everything is being revealed through Headspace, Omori's friends begin to forget who Basil is and why they were searching for him in the first place. There is a shadow figure of Basil which gradually reveals the trauma and past memories they had experienced together. Not only is there a shadow figure of Basil but there is also a black, ghostly creature referred to as Something. This Something is later revealed to represent Mari. While Headspace is a land of exploring and reliving the happy parts of the past, it deals with much heavier subjects as well.

Faraway Town

Sunny and his friends grew up in this town, developing close friendships and many good memories. Through the gameplay, you play as Sunny (the player also has the choice to rename the character, but the character is officially named Sunny). You soon understand that you're playing through his past few days living in this town. You also learn later on that Sunny has been isolating himself since the traumatic incident (meaning he has not left his house for 4 years). Through his days he meets up with his old friends, only to tell them hes moving in a couple days. Through these days Sunny comes to realize that things aren't how he used to remember. Aubrey and her friends pick on Basil, Kel is on his own, and Hero moved away for college. Through his last days in this house, Sunny is faced once again with his trauma, and in some cases his delusions get the best of him. The figure of Something follows Sunny around through hallucinations in his real life. The ending of the game is determined by the players decisions throughout but each meaning hold an importance to Sunny as a character.
