“...Can you….hear me?”
Is...someone there?
“Hello? ….Are you there?”
I raise my voice to answer, my voice comes out as a:
/* This Section allows the reader to choose their preferred Pronouns*/
[[Gruff croak|Awakening2][$Decision1 to 1]]
[[Gentle whisper|Awakening2][$Decision1 to 2]]
[[Melodic note|Awakening2][$Decision1 to 3]]
I slowly manage to pick myself off from the ground as I strain to hear the speaker. The voice was distorted, to the point where I couldn’t make out if they were man or woman, or something in between.
As to where I was...well, I was in an alley. A dirty, grimy alley of some city block that I couldn’t recognize.
“Oh, you’re up.” The speaker said, and I found myself glancing up towards the source of the voice. Above me was a trumpet, sticking out of the wall like a speaker.
“No thanks to you.” I grunt in reply.
“Touchy, aren’t we?” I could almost hear them grin, “You took a nasty blow to the head there. You feeling alright?”
I raised my hand to the back of my head, and found a surprising wetness against my fingers. Pulling my hand back, I saw a splotch of red gently trailing down my skin. Despite this though, I didn’t feel any pain. Was the shock simply overriding the pain? Or was there something else going on?
[[Continue|Carry On 2]]“Before you answer.” The voice cut me off, “Do you want to hear a story?”
“Um…”
“An old friend once told me that there was a type of magic in belief, a magic that in fact surpassed the gods themselves, for it is from this magic that all gods are formed.” The Speaker continued, “Shaped by the love and adoration of their followers into the form we know them in now. I scoffed at the time but it seems more like a warning in hindsight. A warning I should have listened to.”
“....okay?”
I shook my head, “I don’t remember much.”
The speaker didn’t even pause, “That’s not surprising.”
“...Doesn’t that mean I should have short term memory loss?” I asked.
“Do you?”
“Well,” I threw my arms up, “Clearly I don’t but--”
“Well, let me give you the short version...no, wait, quick question.” The speaker paused, “The world is very noisy, oh so noisy. Do you want to silence the noise, or do you want to make it louder?”
“I….”
[[Silence|Before Class][$Decision2 to 1]]
[[Turn it up to 11|Before Class][$Decision2 to 2]]I nod, though that action might have been pointless since I don’t know if they could actually see me. “I remember enough.”
“Dodging the question eh? Fair enough.” The speaker somehow gave off the audible impression of a shrug, “Anyway, do you remember what you have to do?”
“Of course.” I reply, “...But uh, can you clarify, just to make sure?”
“Easily.” The speaker’s trumpet blew out a high c3, (note: actually look up music notes for this. Foreshadowing! Aka, perfect pitch.), “You are...no wait, quick question.” The speaker paused, “The world is very noisy, oh so noisy. Do you want to silence the noise, or do you want to make it louder?”
“I will….”
[[Silence|Before Class][$Decision2 to 1]]
[[Turn it up to 11|Before Class][$Decision2 to 2]]“So, that’s what you’ll do, huh?” The Speaker didn’t seem surprised by what I said, and although I hadn’t had the faintest idea of what he was talking about, I felt that I made the right call. Speaking of making the right call…
“Where am I?” I asked the trumpet speaker.
“In the city of Lyrics.” The Trumper Speaker replied.
“I know that, I mean,” I spread my arms out, “Where am I exactly?”
“...Are your eyes not working? You’re in the alley.” I could just tell the person on the other end was shaking their head in exasperation, “If you want to find out where you are, just leave.”
Oh...duh.
[[Go on|Class Choice]]But, before I could actually turn to leave, the Trumpet Speaker continued, “But before that...just what are you?”
I paused, and blinked, “Uh, human?”
“I meant skillset.” The Trumpet rebuffed, what are you good at? What instrument can you play?”
I was a…

[[All Rounder|Class Choice2][$Architype to "All Rounder"]]
As I stepped out of the alley, I became aware of two very important things.
One, the trumpet speaker wasn’t kidding when they said the city was noisy. All kinds of music blasted and burned as I stepped into a crowded plaza. Everyone around me was playing some kind of instrument, from guitars to flutes, from pianos to basses, everything under the sun and then some was being played. Even the buildings, most of which were tall, white, and divine, had musical notes inscribed into them. The clothes that people wore were of the high class kind. With suits, ties, fancy ball gowns and beautiful dresses. The kind you wore when going to an Opera, or a musical theater. Which, come to think of it, was probably very accurate.
Secondly, and this was slightly less obvious at first hearing, was that while everyone was playing an instrument, not everyone was playing them well. The sounds of every note under the script was assaulting my ear drums, but even so, I could tell that a few were better than others. The ones that were actually skilled seemed...different, somehow. I wish I could say more, but in the swirling confines of the crowd, any attempt to see or make out the better or the worse was doomed to failure.

“Wonderous thing, ain’t it?” A voice said from behind me, and I found a man sitting down on a bench, trumpet at his side.
“You’re the--”
“Now hold on!” The trumpet spoke, and not the man, “‘fore you get any bright ideas, this bozo here ain’t doing squat.” It, that is the trumpet, raised one of it’s pistons at the man, “He’s just a passerby, ain’t that right jeff?”
“Jeff” just gave a slight shrug in response.
“What the hell are you?” I asked, “An instrument possessed by a ghost?”
“Sure, why not?” The trumpet replied, the Pistons rising in the form of a shrug.
I furrowed my brow and shook my head in frustration.
“By the way, what do you think of the place?” The Trumpet asked, and once again, I turned and faced the plaza. “Wonderful place, ain’t it? Filled to the brim with all sorts of music. Rock, Opera, Dubstep if you look close enough, and hell, there’s even folk in there if you can make it out amongst all this racket.”
[[Why?]]“Why is there so much of this?” I asked, spreading my arms out, “Hasn’t anyone gone deaf?”
“Oh, they have.” The Trumpet affirmed, “Many of them can’t hear their own footsteps in their own homes. You might even say that they are...tone deaf.”
I gave the trumpet a heated glare in return, and the Trumpet seemed to shrink under my gaze.
“Oh, just having a bit of fun…” It muttered, “Anyway, gonna level with ya here. Do you want to know why everyone is playing so damn much?”
I took a shot in the dark, “There’s a festival going on?”
“There’s always a festival going on.” The Trumpet continued, “All the time, and all of these people? They’re putting everything they’ve got into it. Heart, mind, soul, ‘cept Jeff here.”
“True.” Jeff nodded.
“He don’t play well.”
“More of a painting man myself.” Jeff nodded.
[[I'm Done With This]]
I stared at the Trumpet for a few good moments, then reached over and picked it off the bench. “I’m gonna throw you into a trash compactor.” I said cheerfully as I began to walk away, “Or maybe fling you off the side of a building.”
“Before that, don’t you want to know why everyone is playing so much?”
“Don’t care.”
“They’re making a god.”
I stopped in my tracks.
“Come again?” I asked, holding the trumpet up, “A god?”
“A tied and true god, and not one of the nicer ones. See, these people...they may not know much about good music, but they do know how to create.” The Trumpet made a low note, “The kind of god they’re making...it ain’t nothing pretty. But, at the same time, the world needs something to hang onto, and a god, man made or natural, is just the thing. So, I’ll ask again…”
The Trumpet blared a note I couldn’t recognize, “Do you want to mute the noise? Or to see it crescendo?”

Grand was the first word that came to mind as I sat on a skyboat that carried me over to my destination.
Out of everything that I had seen, this place had certainly earned its name. It was a large structure, but not in an overbearing way, rather than height, the Opera House settled for widith. It had an old Japanese style about it, and even the wooden platform I stepped foot on seemed to have a certain air of dignity.
“Wow.” I muttered as I walked towards the center building, which I assumed was the main gathering hall.
“Yep.” The Trumpet agreed, “If there’s one place Lyric’s done right, it’s this one. Here, people can come to just relax.”
Around me, the people were not playing instruments at high volume like in the plaza. Instead, they just mingled about chatting with each other and just being...well, people. I could spy, out of the corner of my eye, was a small group of people playing forgien instruments I couldn’t recognize, but even so, the melody they played was like the playful wind on a clear day. When it ran through your hair and fluttered your clothes, when it played with your fingers and kissed you gently with it’s embrace.
[[Stop and Listen|Opera House 2]]
“Okay, so, what’s today’s plan?” The Trumpet asked as we descended downwards into the inner workings of Lyric.
“Well, I figured that we would check out the Venue for today.” I stated as we turned the corner on a staircase, “Speaking of, I have a question.”
“Shoot.”
“Well, it’s just, why is it called Venue? It’s not a musical term.” I furrowed my brow, “At least, I don’t think it is.”
“Well, it’s called Venue because this part of the city functions as the primary food supplier.” The Trumpet replied, “Even the arts need food to eat.”
“Hm, I thought there wouldn’t be any farmers.” I remarked.
“Oh, it’s all automated.” The Trumpet said, “No living beings down here.”

Arriving back, in the cover of darkness, I found myself wondering something. I hadn’t realized before.
Where the heck was I gonna sleep?
When I related this to my brass guide, the Trumpet raised it’s first and third pistons in the form a shrug, “Pick a place. These people aren’t lacking in food or shelter.”
“Why?”
“They’re mortal, and they’ve been killing themselves to fuel the God Engine.” The Trumpet replied, their voice colder than iron, “Do the math.”
That was a pretty harsh thing to say, but...if it worked for me, then I had to use what I could to my advantage.
So, finding a room to stay, and a bite to eat, wasn’t hard. Particularly since my landlord was Jeff. Did not see that coming.
“...I don’t get this at all…” I muttered as I munched on a burger in my one bedroom apartment.
“Well, it is what it is.” The Trumpet, which was resting on the table, said, “No point in complaining about it.”
“I guess…”
“Anyway,” The Trumpet continued, “Since you took out the $First, good job on that, by the way. But now, our time frame is shortened, since the God Engine still needs fuel, so I imagine that they’ll try to reroute from somewhere else.”
“So...I accomplished nothing then?” I sighed.
“No, you did something.” The Trumpet returned, “But, as I said, we’re on a short time frame because now, well, they’ll be looking for the person who doesn’t quite fit in.”
“I thought you said that there weren’t any guards.” I returned.
“Oh, there aren’t.” The Trumpet lowered it’s pistons, “But that doesn’t mean that people aren’t gonna be wary. Some might even try to stop you, so I recommend hiding here for a day so the heat dies down.”
“Great.”

“A day well spent, if I do say so myself.” The Trumpet said cheerfully. Or as cheerfully as a trumpet could.
“That’s because you just hang on my shoulder all day, and just tell me what to do.” I snapped, “Not to mention, someone got hurt because of you.”

“I don’t care about that, but why does this place look like a freaking church?!”
In front of me, or rather, us, was a large stone staircase leading up to a building that could best be described as 'Every single church shoved into one building.' It was ugly, headache inducing, and probably a safety violation.

“Well, it’s time for the final battle.” The Trumpet said as I walked towards a surprisingly un-musical looking building.
It was...actually pretty freaky looking. It had a dome-like structure, with a series of floating platforms around it. The tower next to it was jagged and sleek, as if they had somehow made daggers into buildings, but the center dome...There was an opening in the center, as far as I could tell.
As I got closer to the entrance, I felt my eyes being drawn once more to the dome. Even from the outside, I could hear a gentle hum from it. It kinda sounded like a choir...
“Well, the only way to do this, is to power up the God Engine.” The Trumpet spoke up, snapping me out of my trance.
“How do I do that?” I asked, once again finding myself looking at the dome.
“You need to go above, to the bottom of the dome, there, the power value will be found.” The Trumpet explained, “It’s pretty simple, all you have to do is throw a switch.”
<<if $Decision2 == 2>>
“A simple switch huh?” I forced my breath out, then took a deep intake of air, “Alright, let’s go.”
As I entered the building, I couldn’t help but note that there was no one here. No one, nada, zip. I guess my recent shenanigans drew everyone away from the building, which was pretty bad. I think.

I shook my head once more as I passed by a set of double doors that lead me further into the building. It wasn’t long before I found a set of stairs that lead me downwards. While descending them made me feel like I was entering the ninth circle of hell, the humming was growing all the more louder as I went, and I came to a stop at the bottom of the dome.
I was on a floor that encircled the entire bottom of the interior, with a control center to the far right of where I stood.
Looking upwards, I found a step ladder that would take me to where the God Engine was, and I found myself staring into the face of a star.
In the center of the dome, was a bright ball of pure energy, with the hum I heard from before now distinct. Was this thing responsible for the humming? For the music?
“Hey, what do I do now?” I asked my Trumpet.
But I didn’t hear any response, no snarky comment or oddly serious reply. Glancing over my shoulder, I found that the Trumpet was gone, and I was left alone.
“...Did I drop it somewhere?” I asked myself, then shook my head. I turned my attention to the control panel, and I nodded. I could focus on one thing, not two.
Heading over the control panel, I began to fiddle with the levers and wires, my hands a blur as I worked. A power up switch here, a redirection there…
It was all pretty simple, really.
Before long, I was done, and I turned away from the panel. As I began to leave, a series of high pitched warning sirens sounded, and red lights began to flash. Typical warning signs, I noted.
“I should be able to get out if anything really goes wrong.” I muttered to myself.
I only made it one step further before a powerful force knocked me clear off my feet and slammed me against the wall.
Ever been stunned? How about blacking out for a moment? The weird thing is, at first, you don’t feel anything, just the slight sensation of being weightless. However, I summoned my will to stand up, and then came the pain. Holding a hand to my head, I stumbled over to the railing, where I held onto it for support.
Looking up at the star, I saw it glow a beating red. For a moment, I was transfixed, and then I found myself going towards the star. I could feel it’s breath, it’s pulse...it’s life. It was so warm…
I found myself under the star as it descended on me…
The only thing I could hear as I reached upwards was the choir…

It didn’t take me that long to give the latest batch of food a quick sprinkle of mismatched spices in bad places like the oven, but, I did manage to snatch a knife from the kitchen when I somehow had gotten wrapped up in cutting up some salmon. Not sure how that happened, but hey, knife.
As I headed towards the sky-boats, the knife tucked safely away in my jacket, I shook my head once more as I looked up at the rising stars. From here, on the sea of clouds, everything just seemed so...untroubled.
Maybe that’s why I….

Finally, on the far side, there was what appeared to be a control room of some kind, only reachable by suspended catwalks that had a suspicious lack of guard rails.
“Huh.” I muttered to myself.
“Okay, this should be simple.” The Trumpet spoke up, “We can…”
