The Kindle is a great example of a digital program or object that can be best described as a Medium of new media. The numerical representation of books on the kindle can be used as sampled data in digitization which consists of turning continuous data, such as pages on a book into discrete data (Manovich 28). So in order fro each page to come up on this digital device a series of digital numbers in the modem allow you to read or turn the page at your own pace. The images in each book can be shown in a more quantified form on your kindle because the range of numerical value it qualifies all can make up these pictures so that you may view them accurately. Numerical representation of the books or images on the kindle is than turned into a more fractural structure that consists of independent media documents i.e. pages in the book, in a modular form (Manovich30). Modularity contains independent media structures that remain independent (Manovich31). In turn the kindle allows its users to multitask with out changing the structure of one book while you start reading on another one. The Automation(Manovich32) is in turn the most important on a kindle because the program automatically comes with the formatted “agent” that allows the layout of each book or magazine to accurately mimic what appears in the physical text in terms of fonts and so forth. The user also is allowed the luxury of reading multiple books without loosing the page on previously opened texts. In turn this allows a wide range of variability (Manovich37) because books or texts you purchase can be in recorded form, allowing the device to automatically read the texts for you, or it can display on the device in different settings of lights, fonts, and languages. Transcoding on the kindle is what ultimately ties in all the components of the functions of it in terms of the type of formats used in order for them to be consistent with each book, as well as the compression of the files, for example I noticed each page you are on it has a percentage notification on the bottom indicating how far you are through your text. The kindle is just one example of a Medium, a method of which an object is produced or distributed (slide 26) which in this case book, documents, magazines, newspapers and many others are all distributed through this convenient, easy-to-use digital object.
