Computer and Human Relationship

@JaredAbrahamWSU

Some of us have a difficult time with technology. We try to enter our latest Facebook status, but somewhere between the typing and pressing post it somehow disappears without a trace. We dread the newest software update not knowing what is going to be changed on us. There are also some people who are never flustered by the latest and greatest from the text community. Embracing whatever the tech world can throw at them.

In the movie “The Matrix” there are two kinds of characters. There is the master of computers, Morpheus, and the guy who still can’t figure out how his alarm clock works. The master has the ability to see rows upon rows of ones and zeros and make complete sense out of it, knowing that there is a specific order within the Matrix. Meanwhile, the guy who perhaps is technologically less proficient at first is confused by these jumbled numbers, lost in the pattern.

In “As We May Think” by Vannevar Bush, he talks about all of the benefits of technology, from improving his food to giving him an “increased knowledge of his biological process so that he has had a progressive freedom from disease and an increased span of life.” (Bush, pg 37) This was a main point in The Matrix, creating a fictional world where everything had order. However, Bush also states that as more technology is being created and more research is being done, we have a limit on what our brains can remember. (Bush, pg 37) We need order.

As new technology is being created many great discoveries will no doubt be made, diseases will be eradicated and food will be improved. However, with more technology saturation we could possibly be consumed in a world of technology waiting for the next update, and ignoring our human counterparts.

New Media Object – IPad

The first iPad came to the world on April 2010 and it is obvious example for digital object. It was only about two years since the first iPad released but it shifted the technological human demands to higher levels as a new media. More than that, people are getting close to technological world because of the digital device’s features as iPad and it brings people closer to others by communication developments. Apple Incorporation created iPad and it is small mobile computer with touching operations. It has Numerical Representation as it converts continuous data into numerical representation (Manovich 28); for example, you can view your images on iPhoto that is one of the greatest applications on iPad. There are a lot of features on the iPhoto that you can adjust the image’s color, shadow, angles and you can flat or crop the photo. It also satisfies Modularity; Manovich states “These elements are assembled into large-scale objects but continue to maintain their separate identities” (Manovich 30). We can watch movie on Ipad and movie is the combination between sounds and images. They always have different identities but they all run at the same time. Plus, the World Wide Web is also modular (Manovich 31); the iPad was invented with built-in Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity. That way, you can search any websites on Ipad by Safari. Besides, iPad goes along with Variability as it maintains itself and generates new supporting programs by period updates (Manovich 38).  IPad’s update requirements are established in the App Store and it will alert you when the new updates release. This new media is an amazingly great device that has multiple benefits with reasonable prices.

Hello. My name is Kyle McGee. I am a first year student here at WSUV and I am trying to achieve a Business degree. The Roku Streaming Player (@RokuPlayer) is a new media product that my came across a few years ago. I have enjoyed using it at home for the past couple of years and just had to get my own when I moved to Vancouver. The Roku Streaming Player is a device that allows you to access internet streamed video and audio through your television. It offers hundreds of channels with favorites such as @Netflix, @Amazon Instant Player, @Hulu, and @Pandora. All you need is a television set and an internet connection. The Roku fits into the characteristic “#Numerical Representation” because it allows you to stream in 1080p HD. 1080p refers to resolution which is “the frequency of sampling” (Manovich 28). It also fits into “#modularity” because it allows you to view hundreds of movies and TV shows that make up @Netflix (along with many other entertainment companies). The Roku fits in the “#Automation” category because it allows you to type in, search, and scroll through desired content with the use of a remote control. The Roku has to know what the content you are searching for is. In others words, It “requires a computer to understand, to a certain degree, the meanings embedded in objects being generated.” (Manovich 30). When it comes to “#variability,” the Roku fits in because it comes in different models. The models are based on HD content, what type of HD content is playable, and other added features. Finally, the Roku can tie into the “#transcoding” characteristic because it consists of “the computerization of media.” (Manovich 37). The media that has been computerized (video and audio) is streamed through your TV via internet connection. The Roku Streaming Player is very useful new media product.
