Capstone Project Idea

I am going to do my Capstone project on Palm Oil and how it is affecting the environment, animals, and even people. The biggest thing with harvesting palm oil is the deforestation that is decreasing the population of many different species (i.e. Orangutans and Elephants). By using sustainable palm oil plantations we can help save these species from becoming endangered and even extinct. Due to the burning of the forests, we are increasing global warming and are producing one of the largest sources of  green house gases.

In this project I hope to use image files, sound files, and potentially even video files to help portray how manufactures and companies who include palm oil in their products are damaging the world around us. These will help me portray my message and hopefully help people understand what is happening around us

I also want to include that manufactures and companies are now looking into sustainable sources of palm oil so that we are not negatively affecting our environment or anything around us. Companies just need to be aware of what is happening and how it can be prevented.

Capstone Project

My project will be focused on the turmoil that is taking place in Ukraine. For my website, I will focus my efforts on using a video mashup along with a sound file. The conflict involves anti-government protesters standing-off against authorities, with violence rising to the point where policemen were being shot. These things arose after President Yanukovych’s government rejected an accord with the European Union in favor of stronger ties with Russia. This was an outrage since it was a long term aspiration for integration with Europe, and had been rejected overnight.
To convey these images I think using a sound file will work well with the mashup to incorporate the events that are taking place to this day. In the mashup I will incorporate certain events such as riots and political speeches on the issue. In my efforts, I will try to summarize key events in order to raise awareness of the needs of people in the war zones. With people lacking electricity and water, the church I attend is reaching out by sending food, water, clothing, and everyday essentials to those who are in need. I’m sure that most people are unaware of everything that is going on and I hope this project will shed some light on the things that are happening. With two of my cousins being victims of the crimes occurring during all this mess, this issue is rather important to me. I know that many other people have incurred troubles during these times, and this would be a good way to express what is going on.

Capstone Project Idea

For my capstone project I want to dig into culture in regards to trends, fashion (hair, makeup, etc.) and look at the differences in those trends for different areas. I am a Cosmetology student getting prepared to graduate within a couple months and something I’m passionate about is hair color and different hair color applications and formulations, etc. Hair is a trend that is consistently changing and is a form of expression. Balayage is a recent color application trend that I have been working with and really enjoy. I figured making a webpage about color would be easy for me as I’m in love with the career and certainly wouldn’t get bored of the topic. In regards to my media objects, I plan on recording and editing a video of myself working on a client and utilizing my knowledge of the current trends by applying color (and cutting and styling) with a balayage technique possibly paired with the color melting technique as well. My other form of media could include some of my before and after photos, a compilation of several of them, or a second video of an additional technique. I’d like to talk about why hair is important in culture, particularly American culture, and how it allows people to express themselves as well as the other social aspects about hair and hair color. I feel I could talk about the stereotypes of different fashions and trends and how it can and does affect a person’s life.

I’m here to change the world.

For my Capstone project I have chosen to highlight my animation and digital image composition abilities. These two concepts go hand in hand as the digital imagery required for animating purposes has to be built individually, often even frame by frame. Conveying the motions within each individual character model requires several different frames of the same illustrations, each with a slight alteration from the last. Even the background, which is an entirely separate element, changes often within or between the scenes or has some type of subtle movement there within. My animation is going to be based off of characters that I originally hand illustrated for a friend’s children’s book. The story, which is loosely based around the original, will tie in a message addressing the effects of commercial fishing and sea floor drilling on oceanic sea life, and the rest of the environment as well. Using these characters and their touching story, supported with factual evidence of the real damages done, will hopefully educate the viewer on what we as people are doing to the ocean and its inhabitants. This awareness will inevitably bring about change, at least in ideals, if not in actions as well.  This will be the focus of my website and probably a good deal of my future work. I spent a few seasons fishing out of various ports in Alaska. Having seen the amount of by-catch being killed, and other sea creatures being injured by modern practices first hand, I’ve sworn them off permanently.

I will be looking into why society seems to have lost its appreciation for classical music. It seems that most of society has lost their ability to appreciate music with movements and parts. The weaving of sound to tell a story has been replaced by the three to five minute song about shaking your “badonkadonk”.

To accomplish this I will use a sound file and a video mashup. The sound file will demonstrate the raw beauty of the classical music genre. The video mashup will take the beauty of that audio and pair it up with images to show how well it tells a story.

The layout of my site should reflect classical music as an art form and will present visual characteristics that represent the instruments which make that music. There will need to be content beyond the media that is a part of the assignment. For this I will summarize a few supporting articles such as this one:

http://musicschoolcentral.com/classical-music-dying-just-one-problem/

And this response:

http://www.nafme.org/is-classical-music-dead-readers-comment-on-a-recent-piece-by-author-bill-zuckerman/

This content will assist me in directing the viewer to understand how much classical music is still important to our society. It is found in movies, video games, and is the foundation for most all modern music.

Curt Rice: Assignment 18

The issue I am going to elaborate upon in my Capstone project is the issue of Veteran health care and disability compensation.  Since the revolutionary war, disabled veterans have gone without promised compensation.  The issue not only lies with failing to deliver promised compensation, but also with quality and accessibility of care.  This is leading to a huge amount of veteran and active duty suicides as well as homelessness.  There is a stigma surrounding seeking help in the military, this is the first obstacle needing to be addressed.  Seeking medical care shouldn’t be looked down upon, nor should it be difficult to obtain.  Secondly, care needs to be provided properly and without cutting corners. Lastly, compensation promised to veterans of any era should be delivered in a timely and efficient method as should any promised service.

I will be using an infographic/movie poster created in illustrator as well as a short video documentary discussing my own experience with military health care, with a focus on quality of care received and difficulty of accessing that care.  The projects will relate to each other such that the infographic will be a movie poster for the documentary.  Within the illustrator image I will create a kind of teaser for the documentary, hinting at what the video will contain or maybe posing a question graphically for a viewer to think about while watching the film.  Within the video I will share a number of statistics, as well as my own story and feelings on the process as a veteran, as well as assessing what I know from other fellow veterans.
