Capstone Project Final Edit

My Final entry for the Capstone Project. For a better experience its best to watch the video mash up about the history of video games and then the animated info-graphic. The end result of the video turned out much better in my opinion than I anticipated. I found some great music that sets a great mood when watching. The animation took the longest amount of time; just a constant amount of small tweaks here and there trying to make it look fully finished. If I had more time with it I feel like there could have been many more options. The animation also turned more into how video games of affected our lives, not just their general influence in culture. What I mean by this is the positive and negative effects that people suggest are caused by video games. I tried to make the animation look like they were switching from game to game while you were reading the information I gathered. I also ended up going with no voice over for the animation, as there was a lot of text, so I thought it unnecessary to get the information twice. I did however have a voiceover for the video remix to explain the imagery you see. All clips were exported at 720p, if some of the clips look fuzzy in the remix video, its not the video quality but the video games inside the clips themselves, as they were older games.

Final Project

Explained in two parts; the German Blitzkrieg (Lightning War). A term coined by western journalists to explain German offensive maneuvers during World War II which were very successful against the Allies. Germany had no doctrine called “the Blitzkrieg” but it was rather a collection of both older ideas and innovative ideas on how to do warfare. Blitzkrieg is used today to explain this complex system and many of its concepts are very important to militaries today as well as used by the Allies later in the war.

The goal of these videos is to roughly explain the “German Blitzkrieg” which has become a bit of a mythical subject. The word Blitzkrieg in and of itself is a sort of magic word that means attacking super fast which put simply is not exactly what it was (that there was no magic behind it but rather was a combination of many basic strategies which were direct counters to Allied Strategy). I wanted to sort of debunk the belief that Germany defeated the Allies early on because their technology (tanks, planes, weapons) were better, that they overwhelmed their opponents with numbers or simply flanked around the Maginot line. When it came more down to such things as leadership, communication and less micromanagement which really made the German’s offensives efficient.

My second goal of course is to hopefully do this in an entertaining way which at the same time will educate the viewer.

Capstone Project-Carlson

For my Capstone project i decided to keep working on my info-graphic about video game influence on our society. I want to update the information to fully realize the social impact video games have created, and extend and update the animation to better capture the main media. For the second part I want to stay on the theme, but remix some video game history videos while adding my own voice-over for clarity. While the info-graphic will be on the Pros, Cons, and influence of video games; the video will focus on the full history to help people better understand the topic background. These links are a few help with my research and can give people a better insight on my topic. There is also a great Netflix movie of this topic. For my info-graphic I want to bring to the field what people think of video games, and then present actually studies on the matters discussed, and even produce some scientific facts that help support video games; oh and my view is video games are now an important part of our culture and society. I think the hard part will be trying to condense all the important info down to 1-1:30 min. At the same time if we were allowed to make a longer info-graphic I wold need a substantial amount of time to get my full point across and keep the quality of the actual animation up. I already have the music that fits well with my  info-graphic, I just need to decide whether or not I should add a voice over too.

Capstone Project – Reconstructing Politics

The focus of my Capstone Project will not be on the political viewpoint Pro Choice itself, but on how the expression of the belief can be freed from the stigmatism associated with it. The arguments (for and against) are becoming so overused that the debates are merely becoming more heated.

Personally, if I were to post on my own private Facebook page that I was Pro Choice, or that I had actually had an abortion, chaos would ensue. Most everyone knows the typical “Pro Life” assertions that would follow, so my project is an attempt at introducing an extremely emotionally charged topic in a fashion such that someone might be able to, in a way, remove him or herself from the viewpoint while at the same time expressing it.

I will first do this through an animated infographic created solely by myself, with audio narration utilizing the MS Word “Speak” function for presenting a Pro Choice argument. This removes the direct flood of argumentative thinking by shifting focus from the person presenting/sharing the video to the video itself, and doubly removes the content away from the personal through the narrator (a robotic voice) explaining she is only doing it because she is forced by the author.

Secondly, I will create a mash-up image file containing the most intriguing and heated arguments for and against abortion, including Creative Commons image sources displaying relevant content This allows a viewer to visualize and contextualize the same political topic in diverse ways.

For this project I will be completing a fully animated video using after effects as well as be creating a full sound file recording. The sound recording file will be a remix (music and sound effects) from various sources as well as my own voice which will be used in coordination with the after effects video. The subject material will be on the famous “Blitzkrieg” a term coined to explain the German tactics during World War II. Using after effect’s ability to convey pictures in an animated form I will be able to show the actual tactics in play. The audio will have sound effects as well as music that will be synchronized with the video. Both the text, visuals as well as my own voice will be there explain the base concepts of the Blitzkrieg. The two pieces will also explain the Allies strategies and why the Blitzkrieg was also very effective against their own strategies.

The overall goal is to explain something historical (as well as complex) in a fun, simplified and engaging way rather than just reading it. I also chose the historical subject of the “Blitzkrieg” because it’s a culturally known thing but is usually misunderstood. Officially Germany had no doctrine or strategy of this kind but it was rather a social and cultural reaction to early World War II German military effectiveness which is now historically called the “Blitzkrieg”.
