Randi Higbie – Capstone Project Proposal

The focus of my Capstone Project will be bringing awareness to and addressing body image issues as they relate to teens and pre-teens. I initially intended to focus solely on issues involving teen girls but quickly realized after speaking with friends and colleagues that teen boys are equally as influenced by societal pressures to conform to a certain standard of beauty and attractiveness. The questions that will shape my research are “What is normal?” “What is beautiful?” “What is healthy?” “Why are our differences not embraced instead of shunned?” I do not want this piece to be negative or depressing but hope it will encourage viewers to pause and think about how they contribute to and reinforce stereotypes and standards both consciously and subconsciously.

Some of the inspiration for my project came from the Dove beauty campaign, the “Play Like a Girl” campaign and the organization Girls on the Run. I was also inspired by stories from my friends of things their children have said, done or been affected by in regard to how they feel about their bodies.

My project will include an infographic or animation containing statistical data related to average height/weight ranges, healthy ranges of body fat, cholesterol etc., prevalence of eating disorders among different age ranges, quotes from teens discussing the pressures they feel and/or things they think and say about their bodies. I will also create a video mashup of positive images of different kinds of beauty and clips from other campaigns addressing positive body images and potential interviews with women in my circle. I want all of the elements of this piece to be empowering and positive.

Capstone Project

For my Capstone Project, I will focus on the social issue of climate change. According to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “Climate change is any substantial change in Earth’s climate that lasts for an extended period of time.” Thus, not only does climate change pose a threat to us today, it will cause even greater harm to future generations if it cannot be mitigated immediately. In fact, prominent political figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders and President Barack Obama have stated that climate change is the biggest threat facing both our nation and the world today. Climate change is a very big deal!

To convey the importance of what climate change is doing to our environment, I will produce both an infographic and remixed video that contain shocking statistics and information to support my claims. Both media objects can be easily embedded in the website that I create and they will strongly illustrate the dangers of climate change. I envision that the infographic will be newly generated by me and it will consist of short facts placed over an image. Alternatively, the remixed video will consist of many short Creative Commons video clips that I will put together to present a visual story of the devastating impacts of climate change. I hope that my two media object along with my website dedicated to the impact of climate change will open people’s eyes and inspire them to take action for their own wellbeing, in addition to the well-being of their children, grandchildren.

Capstone Proposal

The topic for this capstone project that is of interest is human trafficking. Human trafficking is a major issue but is often forgot about by the general public who do not face the issues everyday; this is why it is an important topic to discuss. For the overall project, an animation video along with graphs and other visuals will be provided in order to thoroughly explain this important issue.

Most people do not understand how serious and dangerous human trafficking is, and without raising awareness to help stop human trafficking, this will be a growing and continuing problem for years to come. For those who do not know the true meaning of human trafficking, it is when humans are traded back and forth as if they were not living beings. They are usually traded for labor and sexual slavery but there are also other disturbing things that come along with human trafficking. People who are victims of human trafficking need our help to an end to this and to bring them home safe to their families.

After doing some research, it is clear that human trafficking has been an issue for quite some time. Without awareness victims will not get the help they need. Keep in mind how the families of these victims must feel. If someone you loved was in danger due to human trafficking, you wouldn’t hesitate to help.

For my capstone project I am going to focus on the incarceration rate in the US. I will be pointing out the problems with the system and comparing it to other countries incarceration rates. I will be doing these things to help illustrate the magnitude of the issue. I might also try and suggest some possible solutions to the issue, and I could also have a call to action in the project. I will create an info-graphic for the project to showcase some of the information in a colorful and eye-catching way. The second media object that I will include in my capstone project is a remixed video to animate some specific part of the topic.

the subject matter that i will be talking about for my Capstone project will be about Gloving is not a crime which is a campaign for the ban of gloving in music festivals and other music events. Gloving, among other forms of light shows such as Orbitals and flow poi’s became incredibly popular among rave and festival goers all over the United States in the early 2000’s. Over the last few years, however, the understanding of gloving shifted from a genre of art to a hazardous drug-related activity by many government officials.

More often than not, light shows are given while sitting down. when there is a large number of light shows happening at an event with an even larger number of attendees sitting down to enjoy them, fire marshals see it as a fire hazard. it also did not help that many government officials saw the act of gloving to be hand-in-hand with drug issues often associated with rave culture. This rapid shift resulted in the ban of gloving at many major music festivals including those run by Insomniac Events.

For those who have tried to keep the culture of gloving alive and well, there have been numerous instances riddled with heavy-handed consequences.

Brianna Rizzi Capstone Project

My capstone will cover the subject of the accidents and health problem stemming from using smartphones too long. Technology has come a long way from being too expensive to be a household product to easy access from the palm of your hand. This advancement in human technology, although great, it comes with the bad (the saying “too much of a good thing can become bad” comes to mind). Some people become so obsessed with their smartphones that they can’t seem to keep away from them for a long period of time, even leading to mental/physical issues and accidents. Accidents include bikers texting while on their motorcycles (this includes drivers and bicycle riders), people walking while glued to their screens and dropping phones on their face while reading in bed. Using smartphones too much for too long can cause eye problems that potentially leads to blindness, to a condition where excessive use of smart devices can lead to pains to the wrists and hands and even problems to our neck and spine.

I’m going to make an animation, maybe a character that gets into similar situations as those who get into smartphone related accidents, along with texts that show percentages of accidents that happen. I’ll also add in an info-graphic file that show these situations, physical and mental (social too?). Info-graphic will be more informational than the animation, the animation will just show examples of these issues that come from excessive use of smartphones, which will tie in with the whole theme of the website that will center around my subject.

Capstone Project: Student debt crisis

My capstone project is on student debt crisis in the U.S.
Students at Washington state university and throughout many colleges and universities across the country suffer with loan problems. Tuition has sky rocketed from a few years ago causing more students to take out loans. According to the Economist student debt exceeded $1.2trilion in 2014. The direction I decided to follow is to answers the following questions in my project: Does the amount of money students spend on their tuition go back into their pockets? Why is student debt a major problem in the country? What can we do to solve this problem? And what are countries with tuition-free universities doing that we can replicate? My goal is to use some comparison and contrast methods on how much our degrees matter, as well as include statistics to show the effect and consequences of student debt in the long run. I chose this subject because it is a relevant issue in our everyday lives as students and after college. The two media objects I will include in my project are: a continuity video montage and an infographic file. I will incorporate designs and remixes of different files to help visually represent data. Probably add a short video of personal stories with student debt. In addition add a timeline graph to show the trend with tuition increase in the United States. I believe the use of these media relate to each other as it will help better explain the subject matter.

Capstone Intro

The topic I plan to address for my capstone project is the orphan crisis in China. Hand in hand with that, I will address the need for adoption. I am interested in this topic because I’ve been on a few missionary trips and developed a heart for connecting these kids to families and giving them hope through advocacy. I really got to know more about how adoption works and heard countless stories of these Chinese orphans since starting my internship at Bring Me Hope, which I also plan on using for this project as a major resource.

I want my website to take the direction of an informative piece that talks about hard things like abandoned children waiting for families. Even more so as a call to action. The call to action that I hope will get people involved will be to spread awareness though their social media, invite them to volunteer at orphan summer camps, to host a child at their own home, to financially support a child to go to camp, and finally to actually adopt. I plan on approaching this cause from two sides. One is from the reader/viewer and what they could do and the other is from the orphan’s perspective.

The two medias I will use are a video I will make are an infographic video as well as pictures of the orphans. These medias relate to each other because in the video I will address the issues, and state facts. With pictures I will show the kids that are effected by them.

Capstone Project

I will be doing my project on the effects of Pokémon on children. I will be focusing on Pokémon as a whole, including the video games, the trading card game, and the television show. I will talk about the social atmosphere of both the video game, and the trading card game, and how it helps children improve social interactions, and can provide a community for both children and adults. Some schools and parents have become worried about the negative effects of Pokémon like bullying or becoming obsessed.

The two media objects that I will be using are an infographic file and an animation. In the infrographic I will use testimony from experts along with information about how the games will change in ways that can be beneficial to children. Also I will give information about events that have brought people together and how common these events are.

The animation I will show how the different games have made it easier for people to play together and how they are beneficial to children. Along with that I would like to have a moving background of previous games showing how they changed, and some pictures of the events mentioned above in the infographic.

I want to have both the animation and the infographic linked to the main website, and to each other, so that somebody viewing them can go to any of the three pages no matter which page the person is on, that person can move to either of the other.

Serene Ghazi Capstone Project

There is enough food in the world to feed everyone, that is a fact. However, many people don’t know what steps to take to end world hunger. I chose this topic because often it goes unnoticed with all of the disasters happening around the world every day. Although it is a huge problem that we face today, there are many things we can do, especially as students, to help end it, which is why I wanted to discuss these things in my Capstone Project. Solving hunger is a contribution to peace and stability, it also helps increase productivity and creates economic opportunities, it also lays the foundation for progress in health and education. I plan on making an infographic file and an animation. The infographic will show facts about world hunger as well as show the audience how to help end it. The animation will have more details about world hunger and its effects on the world and the people who suffer from it. I plan on making my website filled with visuals rather than long paragraphs because I want people to stay engaged in the topic and I also want the website to be easy to navigate. I plan on incorporating some links to websites that people can donate food, money or even time to help end world hunger.
