Capstone blogpost

At this point, I would like to create a Capstone project on the topic of endangered species in Washington state.  I will create a 3 page website to host a general introduction to the topic with a list of sources (links to Works Cited), an infographic, and a video remix.  I expect the infographic to define the difference between “endangered” and “threatened” species, to list the species that are in danger of becoming extinct, and the reasons why.  The video remix will be used to show images of the species and perhaps include what we can do to help.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has a great website where you can learn about endangered species in your state:  https://www.fws.gov/endangered.  In Washington state, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service currently (2015) lists 36 animals, birds, and fish as being endangered or threatened: 9 are endangered and the rest are threatened: https://ecos.fws.gov/ecp0/reports/species-listed-by-state-report?state=WA&status=listed.  Since 1978 there have been 80 species “delisted” or removed from the endangered species list worldwide, either because they went extinct, or because there was an error in the original data, or because they recovered: https://ecos.fws.gov/ecp0/reports/delisting-report.  The species report at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service website has information broken down into categories such as plants or animals and by region such as the Pacific Northwest/Pacific Islands so you can find what you are looking for more easily: https://ecos.fws.gov/ecp/species-reports.  The “Ask a Biologist” website hosted by ASU has some nice information about endangered species for children: https://askabiologist.asu.edu/what-endangered-species.

Mobile Device Security

With the 2016 election close as hand, it seems like one of the only things you can’t do on your phone is vote for the next president. That being said there is all kinds of sensitive information that is stored and processed through your smartphone. Your social security number, credit card info, health information, birthdays, and other sensitive information that you would rather not share can be made accessible to people that are looking for it. For example, if you are sitting in a Starbucks and want to check your bank account or purchase an item over their public Wi-Fi you can be putting your personal information at risk. The man sitting in the corner could be writing his own movie script or he could be searching the network looking to steal your personal data if you let him. Another concern is that the information you send over the network may not be encrypted. Data can easily be intercepted if it is transmitted over a wireless connection that isn’t encrypted. This means if you sent an e-mail to the financial aid office at your school over a wireless network that isn’t encrypted, a hacker could easily steal all the information that is normally protected by Fasfa. You essentially possess the sum of human knowledge in your hand and while this makes life more convenient, it also means you need to become more vigilant in your online activities to protect your personal data. To show the importance of this I plan to use an infographic and an illustration which are commonly viewed on mobile devices and styling them in a similar way to mobile format to merge the subject with an appropriate style.

Capstone: Diversity of Comic Creators

For my capstone project I want to focus on comic creator diversity. Early comics were dominated by Caucasian men, however with the popularity and evolution of comics ever growing, comics have become a more open art form for an increasingly diverse range of creators. This transition is still in its early stages and minorities still struggle significantly to enter this competitive field. It is important that we encourage the diversification of comics and their creators to promote new genres, to reach minority readers, and to understand different views. Improving this area of comics, which is still very much controlled by white men, benefits not only the careers of varied artists, but readers as well. I would promote this opinion and support it with statistics about minorities in comic careers and facts about comics in education.

I will be creating an info-graphic and an animation video for this project. As a visual art, I feel that using visual representations of statistics and examples to portray the diversity of comics fits well. As I stated above I will focus on data involving minority artists in comic careers and how this relates to readers and their education in social issues. I will attempt to style the media objects in a more stereotypical comic style to fit the theme of my topic. Some vague cameos from popular comic characters may appear. The conclusion of these media objects will attempt to make the viewer think about diversity in comic creators and the benefits of supporting them.

Capstone Project

I’m doing my capstone project on the global warming hoax. There is so much money behind this hoax that majority of the population is simply unaware of the weight behind it. Most people simply haven’t tried to follow the so called “evidence” claims to support this theory. Just like the Y2K hoax, there is no legitimate evidence but empty claims with celebrity stamps of approval. Scientists cannot accurately predict weather out more that a few days so why would anyone think they have proven that climate change is man-made, especially when climate change has occurred naturally for the history of the earth? Temperature records don’t prove anything. There is a lot of money to be made on this and huge leverage by big government control freaks who can use this to dictate every aspect of your life. The facts aren’t convincing at all. Why did the control freaks change the name from global warming to climate change? Because all the cold weather made people realize that global warming wasn’t really happening anything near what the control freaks were claiming. In any case precisely what causes climate to change is a guess – there are just too many variables. By looking at accurate temperature measurements made from weather balloons and satellites over the last 60 years, you will see that they show no atmospheric warming since 1958. Despite the government using more than $50 billion of taxpayers’ money to search for evidence in support of climate change since 1990, no accurate human signal has been identified.

From paper to digital/code

The DTC 375 Language, Texts, & Technology class gives me this idea about changing from a written world to a digital world.

– Written Literacy to Digital Literacy information with web code(eg.twine: they are html and css)
– Drawing from paper and pen to 2D drawing illustrator photoshop to 3D drawing(modeling) to VR 3D drawing tilt brush

I will probably use Infographic file and Remixed video for two media objects where one would be showing the transform from written/drawing to code/digital. Another one might be how would it be as a college program as well as so details about WSUV DTC program. (not sure which one for which media yet.)

There is not much similar program but one would be Interactive Arts and Technology Department in Simon Fraser University

The Capstone Project

For my capstone project, I am going to focus on the subject of the social topic of the world’s poverty.  On the first page of the website, I will explore the topic about the country of North Korea and their families in poverty. The media objects I will use vectored imagery of my drawing with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrate.

The second page of the website I am going to use a remix or mashup of several file for a brief look at the humanitarian profile of North Korea. Their total population is 24.62 million people, 18 million of those people do not consume an adequately diverse diet, and 1.8 million people are in need of specialized nutritious foods to combat malnutrition. Global chronic malnutrition rate is 27.9 percent.  Global acute malnutrition is 4%. The average life expectancy is 69.3 years. The live birth mortality rate is at 87 per 100,000 live births. The live birth mortality rate of children under 5 years old is at 27 per 1,000 live births.

On the third page, I am going to be showing something about the food insecurity and malnutrition in North Korea. This page I am going to use an infographic file to establish a cycle of the people undernutrition. Such as, the causes of malnutrition related to food inadequacy and a serious lack of food diversity. There has been a decrease in soybean, which is one of North Korea’s main sources of protein and lack of vegetable production because of three consecutive years of dry conditions. Chronic malnutrition of age 5 and under is 27.9% that is about 540,000 children. Acute malnutrition age 5 and under is 4% or 90,000 children. The consequences of inadequate diets in mothers relate to higher mortality and low birth weights of infants and children.

Capstone Project – Tyler Frasier

In 2015 the estimated wolf population in Washington state has increased by approximately 32% when compared to the numbers from 2014. There are at least 90 known wolves that run in 18 known packs that range in size from 2 to 8 wolves each. There were 7 documented wolf moralities during the year. Three were caused by humans, three were legal harvest, and one was unknown.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Commission formally adopted the Wolf Conservation and Management Plan in December of 2011. This was plan was adopted to help guide the recovery and management of gray wolves. The intended goal is to naturally recolonize the State of Washington. In the State of Washington wolves are classified as an endangered species under state law regardless of federal status.

For this project I will be creating an animation and an info-graphic file that will provide information about how wolf population and conservation is going in Washington. It will also cover the history of wolves and what led them to become endangered in the first place because I feel that is an important part of the whole story.
