I’m here to change the world.

For my Capstone project I have chosen to highlight my animation and digital image composition abilities. These two concepts go hand in hand as the digital imagery required for animating purposes has to be built individually, often even frame by frame. Conveying the motions within each individual character model requires several different frames of the same illustrations, each with a slight alteration from the last. Even the background, which is an entirely separate element, changes often within or between the scenes or has some type of subtle movement there within. My animation is going to be based off of characters that I originally hand illustrated for a friend’s children’s book. The story, which is loosely based around the original, will tie in a message addressing the effects of commercial fishing and sea floor drilling on oceanic sea life, and the rest of the environment as well. Using these characters and their touching story, supported with factual evidence of the real damages done, will hopefully educate the viewer on what we as people are doing to the ocean and its inhabitants. This awareness will inevitably bring about change, at least in ideals, if not in actions as well.  This will be the focus of my website and probably a good deal of my future work. I spent a few seasons fishing out of various ports in Alaska. Having seen the amount of by-catch being killed, and other sea creatures being injured by modern practices first hand, I’ve sworn them off permanently.

Capstone Project Idea

I will be looking into why society seems to have lost its appreciation for classical music. It seems that most of society has lost their ability to appreciate music with movements and parts. The weaving of sound to tell a story has been replaced by the three to five minute song about shaking your “badonkadonk”.

To accomplish this I will use a sound file and a video mashup. The sound file will demonstrate the raw beauty of the classical music genre. The video mashup will take the beauty of that audio and pair it up with images to show how well it tells a story.

The layout of my site should reflect classical music as an art form and will present visual characteristics that represent the instruments which make that music. There will need to be content beyond the media that is a part of the assignment. For this I will summarize a few supporting articles such as this one:

http://musicschoolcentral.com/classical-music-dying-just-one-problem/

And this response:

http://www.nafme.org/is-classical-music-dead-readers-comment-on-a-recent-piece-by-author-bill-zuckerman/

This content will assist me in directing the viewer to understand how much classical music is still important to our society. It is found in movies, video games, and is the foundation for most all modern music.

Curt Rice: Assignment 18

The issue I am going to elaborate upon in my Capstone project is the issue of Veteran health care and disability compensation.  Since the revolutionary war, disabled veterans have gone without promised compensation.  The issue not only lies with failing to deliver promised compensation, but also with quality and accessibility of care.  This is leading to a huge amount of veteran and active duty suicides as well as homelessness.  There is a stigma surrounding seeking help in the military, this is the first obstacle needing to be addressed.  Seeking medical care shouldn’t be looked down upon, nor should it be difficult to obtain.  Secondly, care needs to be provided properly and without cutting corners. Lastly, compensation promised to veterans of any era should be delivered in a timely and efficient method as should any promised service.

I will be using an infographic/movie poster created in illustrator as well as a short video documentary discussing my own experience with military health care, with a focus on quality of care received and difficulty of accessing that care.  The projects will relate to each other such that the infographic will be a movie poster for the documentary.  Within the illustrator image I will create a kind of teaser for the documentary, hinting at what the video will contain or maybe posing a question graphically for a viewer to think about while watching the film.  Within the video I will share a number of statistics, as well as my own story and feelings on the process as a veteran, as well as assessing what I know from other fellow veterans.
