Veteran Suicide Rate.
For my project, I want to discuss an issue that is often overlooked by our society as a whole. That is military veteran suicide rate. My own personal experiences in the military left me with first hand knowledge to the severity of this ongoing problem. In 2012 alone more veterans succumbed to suicide than to deaths in combat in Iraq or Afghanistan. The United States department of Veteran Affairs released a study covering the years from 1999-2010, revealing that as many as 22 veterans were committing suicide per day.
For my project I want to compare and contrast the suicide rate while soldiers are still actively service and the first three years of after leaving the service. I want to focus on these areas, because these are what are what I would consider the most at risk timelines for suicide rates of soldiers. As I know, the times before a deployment can be painfully and emotional trying for individuals to cope with, often leading to a spike in suicide rates. Then next the first three years after leaving service is another of which suicide amongst veterans runs prominent due not being able to adjust or assimilate back to civilian life, often feeling an emotional and social disconnect amongst prior friends and family. In turn, leading to severe depression and possibly suicide. My overall goal is to bring attention to the high suicide rates that not only soldiers face during active service but after they leave service as well. I will be using an infographic to illustrate the numbers of suicides for each category and video mashup to highlight some of these ongoing issues.
VR-Capstone
For my Capstone project, I will be focusing on the VR (virtual reality) arms race and how it will affect the world. Virtual reality was something of a dream for people. A world in which you can enter, explore and feel. The technology has existed for a long time, but these systems were to expensive, heavy, and featured many problem such as not enough immersion.
The first company that started this “VR revolution” was Oculus in 2013. Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus, created an Oculus development kit which grabbed the attention of many different companies and game developers. This was the start of the VR arms race
Today, many companies are partnering up and going against other companies for the first lines of consumer VR systems. Many of these products are competing and coming out this year in 2016. With billion dollar deals between big companies such as facebook, this is easily the next step up in video gaming and other medias. Maybe throughout the future, this technology will expand into different areas such as hospitals or the military.
For the two different explanations I plan on creating an infographic and a remix video. The infographic will focus on the information of the company’s positions and how this VR arms race is unfolding today. This is meant to give the reader a good idea on what is happening in a political company sense. The remix video will show how this is affecting the world and also how the arms race is unfolding. The remix video will consist of visuals through different media channels (such as the news) and visual demonstrations.
It's been a long road, but consumer VR is finally reality. Rift and Gear VR are just the start of this revolution.https://t.co/2FJNRvEQj0

Nic Stevens – Capstone Proposal
Drinking and driving has been an issue for many years, and unfortunately has only been getting worse. I thought it would be interesting to address the consequences of drinking and driving such as injuries, deaths, DUIs, jail time, fines, suspended license. The two media projects I was planning to create were going to include the infographic file as well as an animation. They are both relative to each other because I want to relay a strong message that will stick with my audience in these two mediums.
The infographic is going to pose as an ad, and contain a simple caption, however the image below the caption will be powerful. An idea that I had for the infographic includes two things. The caption will say something such as “Don’t Drink and Drive”, or “The Faster You Drink, The Faster You Crash”. I will then have a picture of a medium/close up shot of an individual drinking a full glass of beer. Inside of the beer, I am planning on drawing a car using Adobe Illustrator and make it look like the car is crashing into the individual’s face. I may also use Adobe Photoshop to make the face look damaged around the lips. This will relay a simple, yet powerful message to my audience.
The animation will show various statistics. I am also trying to develop a script to possibly contain a cartoon skit demonstrating the consequences of drinking and driving.

Capstone Proposal
the subject I am going to do for my capstone project is on the subject of cell phone use while driving. you are more impaired when talking or texting while driving, than when you are drunk. First, I am going to go and search for all information on impaired driving and then narrow it down to cell phone use while behind the wheel. Making sure to focus on that one topic instead of using information about impaired driving as a whole.
