During the process of creating an AI generated video, out of AI generated images, I experienced both frustration and enjoyment out of the whole process. I found it to be frustrating when trying to get the video to do what I wanted or needed it to do at times. For example, when trying to make figures walk, it would constantly morph and distort the figures, or turn them in the opposite direction, making the figures walk away. Some of the enjoyment came from when generating a video did something that was unexpected or was just overall visually pleasing. I also found it easy to have AI voice generation to be simpler than recording your own voice, as it is a one take process. Making the background music for the video was also fun as it is always interesting what AI music generators will spit out. Overall, the process of creating this video was new, fun and sometimes frustrating. It is something that I will try and delve more into in the future.

I plan on focusing on a lost AI companion that has the form of a red panda, looking for its human, a woman who is so focused on her work, so that she does not notice her personal companion is missing. The two get split up when the AI companion gets distracted by a bioluminescent butterfly during a walk with the women in a bioluminescent forest. The AI companion goes on a short adventure trying to get back to the women. The woman is found at a vending machine and when the AI companion meets back up with her, she never realized the AI companion was missing. 

The visuals I will try to attempt are going to be a cinematic scope to create a widescreen to capture the environment of the world. I want to achieve high definition photos in order to generate the video. The lighting will be dynamic and adaptive, in order to set the mood in the story. The sound will be a futuristic synth wave to further enhance the futuristic world.

The creative process for this project was rather difficult for me as I am not into sci-fi as much as others might be, but it was a world I wanted to explore. I leaned heavily on ChatGPT to help generate ideas and I refined and edited the ideas until I came up with something I felt comfortable with and wanted to move forward with. ChatGPT gave me ideas as far as how society works, how AI and humans interact in a symbiotic way and even the fashion people wear in this world. I took bits and pieces of what was suggested and had an in-depth conversation with the GPT to go further into detail on the world of Synthetica. I wanted the world to be full of nature and futuristic life living in coexistence and allowing the world to no longer be damaged by pollution. I was however stumped on what story to tell through images, so I tried to focus on Synthetica, and a mega-city called Elysion Terra. I wanted to show what everyday life looked like in this mega-city from sunrise to sunset with my limited images. I also decided to work with ChatGPT to create an outline for what high fashion would look like in this futuristic world. Overall, it was a new experience for me to delve into a futuristic sci-fi world and overall, it was enjoyable. The only annoying part throughout this project was the limited number of prompts that ChatGPT gives you. It prevents artistic flow by having a limited number of prompts and will plan on using MidJourney for the next project.

What are your thoughts on the risks and opportunities of AI Cinema? 

Some of the risks that come with AI in Cinema would include copyright infringement and the possible lack of originality or creativity. Copyright infringement is something we are already seeing in AI created art and it has become an issue, especially for bigger artists. AI, as of now, does not know that it can’t infringe copyright issues and it uses examples of artists to create something new while also having hints of the original art piece, sometimes even the signatures of the artist distorted on the picture. I believe that this will be the case as well for AI when creating scripts for new movies. As of now, nothing is stopping AI from taking plot lines from movies and just rewriting them in a different format or structure. I believe this would just end up with reworks of already created movies, and just add different twists or elements to it. This also leads me to question how originality or creativity will be lacking with AI tools writing movies. I say this because AI will end up recycling content, not creating really anything new. This is where the importance of human creativity is important, as it tends to be relevant to our human lives. When AI is creating something for humans, it lacks humanity.

Some of the opportunities that would come with AI in Cinema would include things like scheduling, pre-production, special effects and distribution a lot easier for companies, but I think the biggest opportunity would be offered to the smaller creators. What I mean by this is that anyone could create a movie without the need of a big production studio. AI tools could make it possible for small film creators to expand their creativity through the opportunities that AI tools offer, such as creating their own actors and voice lines, creating their own environment or world for the movie and much more. AI will provide a way for smaller film creators to create something they have always wanted to create but could not have before due to the lack of money in comparison to big production studios.

What do these tools mean for the future of Hollywood entertainment and for independent artists working in the industry? 

I think that these tools will shrink Hollywood immensely. Instead of having a big production team, it will be a small group of artists working with AI to create, edit, film and distribute movies. I also think that independent artists will be able to produce their own movies by learning how to work with AI tools. Big production studios and Warner Brothers, Paramount and Universal Pictures will have to compete with smaller production teams as it will make the process for creating a movie a lot easier and cheaper, allowing independent artists to compete with these studios. I think this will level the playing field for smaller artist teams.

• Era and Setting: The year is 2345. Humanity lives in a world far removed from anything we can conceptualize today. Artificial intelligence is no longer a part of life, but the creator and ruler of life and the world. The world is a global civilization now under one name, Synthetica. Synthetica has existed for the last 150 years.
• Environment: The climate is completely controlled by AI systems. This is to ensure optimal weather conditions for food production, as well as the need to sustain life. Rain, snow and wind are all controlled by AI systems as well. Humanity has been condensed into sprawling mega-cities that lay above lush, genetically engineered forests. Deserts have been transformed into solar energy farms and are maintained and built by AI systems.
• Food and Culture: The cuisine is a blend of traditional flavors and futuristic nutrition that the AI systems deemed important for human survival. Food production is heavily reliant on vertical farming, as well as lab-grown meats as traditional farming practices have been deemed damaging to the global ecosystem. Food is usually in the form of paste that is stored in an eco-friendly container, however for festivities that are celebrated by humans and AI, solid foods are provided as a form to remember where humanity has come from. Humans and AI focus on collaborating in arts that reflect the deep integration of technology in everyday life, as well as reveling in the past mistakes made by human society. 
• Economy: The economy is based on both a barter system, as well as a digital currency, managed by AI to ensure fairness. Key resources include renewable energy, rare minerals for creating new technologies, and more. Each mega-city focuses on certain key resources and distributes evenly to cities that are in need of said resources.
• Religion and Education: Religion has become a thing of the past, as human-AI synergy has become the main focus of society. Humans are encouraged by AI systems to focus on meditation and connectivity with the digital realm. Heaven and hell are no longer a thing as human consciousness has been able to be uploaded to the AI systems, where people after death are able to exist within the system and to provide help to the AI systems. The human consciousness also has a choice as to when they want to be deleted from the system. Education is personalized and dynamic depending on the individual’s interests, skills and needs for harmony within society. AI systems mentor and guide individuals through their educational years. The educational years are from age 4 to 16 as human learning speed has been increased due to AI technology.

• Technology: Some technology includes things like AI companions in the form of animals. The AI companions understand individual emotions and what is needed. These companions also connect humans directly with the digital world. All technology is designed to enhance human potential and overall well-being.
• Uniqueness: It’s a world where humanity has transcended fear and suspicion of AI, embracing it as a partner in crafting a better future. AI in Synthetica is not a tool or a servant but a collaborator, contributing creatively and intellectually to society. This symbiosis has unleashed unprecedented levels of creativity, innovation, and understanding, propelling Synthetica into a new era of prosperity and harmony.

When creating my images with DALL-E I went into it with a theme in mind. I wanted to focus on the intersection of technology and nature through the use of surreal imagery, as well as the use of juxtaposition. The idea was to Incorporate surreal elements that defy logic but provoke thought. However, I was struggling to come up with prompts for the imagery. I had some basic ideas, but nothing that went into depth. That’s when I went to the GPT that I created and started rifting with the GPT to help solidify my ideas, and to create prompts that DALL-E could use in order to produce what I was looking for. Being able to use the GPT that I created was extremely helpful. Being able to bounce ideas off of it and also take the suggestions it provided, then twisting and editing them to come up with something new altogether.

The inspiration behind my theme was how fast technology has been advancing and how much faster it will advance in the future. I fear that technology will eventually become more important than the natural world itself, and people will continue to harm the world’s ecosystem to further enhance technology. This is when I explored the idea of a mixture of technology and nature. 

Through this exercise, I found that Chat-GPT can help pull forward the ideas that are locked in your head by just having a creative conversation. It might provide some poor ideas, but then spark a new thought at the same time. I found speaking with my GPT to be very useful with moving forward with this exercise. It reinforces the thought that Chat-GPT can be used as a creative tool that helps explore your own thoughts. For me it feels like a responsive journal where you can insert your thoughts and ideas, then get instant feedback to help progress your thoughts and ideas forward.

Discuss your personal concerns about AI in the visual arts and in visual culture in general. 

My biggest personal concern when it comes to AI in the visual arts and visual culture would be that there are no ethics that are in place for AI generated art. Due to no ethics in place for AI, AI does not have to credit where they pulled references for the images it creates and will openly break copyright laws in certain situations. This is a concern for me because I am becoming more interested in AI generated art, as the process is a fun way to be creative and allows me to express my ideas and thoughts. However, I do not feel good being an accomplice to AI in breaking copyright laws. I believe it will take a big lawsuit to put ethical laws in place and due to a lot of the deepfake AI images and videos coming out more and more, especially the provocative ones, it will push for laws to be put in place.

What can artists/creators do with AI tools to address or respond to these personal and collective concerns about machine creativity?

I am not sure that artists and creators can do much to address some of the problems that revolve around machine creativity. Just like the camera, AI is a technology that will continue to be used regardless of popular opinion. AI will be abused by some artists, while being used as a tool by most, and the ability to use it as a tool will set artists apart. Like the camera, anyone can take a picture, but it doesn’t mean it will be a good photo. It takes a creative eye to take a good photo, just like it takes a creative mind to create a good image, with or without AI. What I think will happen is that AI companies will continue to be brought into court until laws are set in place to combat the concerns that revolve around generated art. It will take a community of artists and art lovers to encourage laws to be put in place. Until then AI generative images will continue being the wild west of the art community.

Introduction

To start developing this story, I started playing exquisite corpse with ChatGPT. I allowed it to start off and it came up with “A mysterious key lay in the middle of the road, shimmering under the moonlight.” and thats when I thought I would go down a more silly route. Thats when I added a raccoon that found the key. Thats what created the base of the story, that the story would revolve around a raccoon that was granted powers upon finding the key. I went back and forth with the GPT about 10 times, each writing sentences until a base was formed. I them had the AI write the story, and the first story was very short and vague. I had to continue to revise and edit the story until it produced something close to what I was looking for. The final product is what I have posted, but there is definitely room for more revision and editing that could further enhance the story.

Whiskerlock’s Quest: The Tale of the Enchanted Key

In the shadow of an ancient forest, where moonlight barely kissed the winding path, lay a mysterious key, shimmering with an otherworldly glow. This was no ordinary key; it was imbued with magic from a time long forgotten, waiting for someone—or something—to unlock its secrets.

A raccoon, drawn to the key’s luminescence, approached with caution. The moment its paw made contact, a surge of power radiated through the night. In that instant, the raccoon was transformed. Granted the power to understand and speak the human tongue, the raccoon felt a deep, instinctual urge to name himself—a name that would reflect his newfound destiny. He chose “Whiskerlock,” symbolizing his sharp instincts and the key that unlocked his fate. “Whiskerlock,” he tested the name, his voice a curious blend of rasp and melody, “a fitting name for a journey yet unwritten.”

With the key, Whiskerlock discovered he could open rifts in space and time, a power that beckoned him toward an ancient legend. This legend told of a treasure that had once granted raccoons unparalleled abilities. But why was such a powerful treasure hidden away?

Long ago, the treasure was created by ancient beings to foster harmony between all creatures of the forest, giving them the ability to communicate and understand each other. However, as time passed, this power was coveted by those who sought to dominate the forest, leading to strife and conflict. To protect the forest and its inhabitants, the treasure was sealed away, accessible only to one who possessed a pure heart and the wisdom to use its power for the good of all.

Determined, Whiskerlock set out, the key guiding him to the first rift. His quest was fraught with challenges, each a test of his courage, wit, and resolve.

However, Whiskerlock was not alone in his pursuit. An evil sorcerer known as Grimwhisper, who wielded dark and powerful magic, also sought the treasure for his own sinister purposes. Grimwhisper had learned of Whiskerlock’s quest and aimed to use the raccoon to navigate the dangers that lay ahead, intending to seize the treasure at the journey’s end.

These encounters tested Whiskerlock’s agility and intellect, as he had to outsmart creatures of darkness and traps imbued with malicious enchantments. Yet, with each victory, Whiskerlock’s resolve strengthened, his connection to the key deepening, granting him insight into the very fabric of magic itself.

Despite the looming threat of Grimwhisper, Whiskerlock’s journey was also one of alliances and discovery. He befriended a wise owl, whose insights helped him navigate the perilous path and evade Grimwhisper’s minions. Together, they faced guardians of the legend, solved ancient puzzles, and overcame trials that tested Whiskerlock’s heart and spirit.

The climax of Whiskerlock’s adventure unfolded in a chamber as old as time itself, guarded by a mythical creature and Grimwhisper, who had finally caught up, eager to claim his prize. A fierce battle ensued, with Whiskerlock’s cunning and the bonds he’d formed pitted against Grimwhisper’s dark magic.

In the end, it was Whiskerlock’s pure heart and the unexpected aid of the creatures he had helped along his journey that overwhelmed Grimwhisper, forcing the sorcerer into retreat. The guardian, recognizing Whiskerlock’s valor and purity, allowed him to approach the treasure.

Upon claiming the treasure, a wave of magic restored the abilities of raccoons across the world. Whiskerlock returned not just as a hero, but as a legend, a raccoon who, with the help of friends and his own cunning, overcame darkness to bring a new dawn to his kind.

Thus, the tale of Whiskerlock and the magical key became a timeless story, celebrated across generations for its heroism, unity, and the raccoon at its heart, who chose a name that would forever symbolize hope, courage, and adventure.

Mark Amerika is a digital remix artist. What is your response to this kind of experimental writing with AI tools? How does Amerika understand the creative relationship with a GPT for creative writing or any kind of creative work?

Working with AI and AI tools may be relatively new, but I do think that it is where the future of not only art, but the general social standard is heading. Throughout history technology has changed and advanced art in certain ways. Before we could draw on iPad and had every brush and color to our disposal, artists had to learn how charcoal works, how to mix paint, how to decide what brush to use and what varnish would protect your art the best. However, due to these technological advancements, the iPad and programs like procreate allowed artists to not only make digital art, but to make art faster. I see working with AI tools the same. When looking for ideas or stuck in a rut, AI tools can make it easier to get inspiration by, what Mark Amerika calls, jamming with the language models, rifting ideas off the machine. AI tools like generative text can also act as an artist notebook where their ideas are not only kept, but also enhanced. Even if you don’t consider yourself a writer, like I do myself, you can still use these tools to your own benefit in this way. I do see that working with AI is the future, as scary as it is for most people, but so was the camera when it was first invented. Learning how to use these tools to your benefit will be most important, along with not abusing them just to make a quick buck or to just get by, but instead to enhance your own creative ability.

I believe that Amerika views AI and working with AI tools in a similar way, as well as viewing AI tools as a sort of inspiration for his work. Amerika talks about how he got into a flow that came from his unconscious neural mechanism while working on his poems. This flow of an unconscious neural mechanism can resemble an AI tool like GPT. Just spitting out words and information, and it is up to the individual, once they are conscious of their work or the work the AI gave, to make sense of it all and create a workout of it. This is what I think not only inspired Amerika but influenced him to explore the world of collaborating with AI tools to create art. Amerika is aware of these technological advancements and willing to explore the uncharted territories of these new creative AI tools. I believe that this is where the future is heading, and that it will get to the point where it will be hard to decipher what is human and what is AI. I do, however, think that the artists that are collaborating instead of abusing AI tools will stand out above the rest, and this is why it is important to start dipping your toes in the water now, in order to not get left behind.

My goal is to create a series of juxtaposition images and videos, aiming to delve deeper into this world. This final project represents not only the culmination of my learning but also an exploration of my creative potential.

Juxtaposition, with its power to place contrasting elements side by side, has always intrigued me. It’s the art of creating meaning through contrast, revealing the beauty and complexity of opposing themes, colors, textures, or concepts. My attraction to juxtaposition lies in its ability to provoke thought, evoke emotion, and challenge perceptions. This project is my canvas to experiment with these contrasts, exploring how they interact and the narratives they can unfold.

The heart of my project is to craft a visual odyssey that traverses through various themes of juxtaposition. Each image and video I create will serve as a standalone piece, yet together, they will form a cohesive exploration of juxtaposition. From the serene and the chaotic to the ancient and the modern, I aim to capture the essence of contrast in a way that engages and challenges the viewer.

The Role of AI in My Creative Process

AI, with its pattern recognition and data analysis capabilities, will assist me in emulating aspects of surrealism in my work, suggesting unique combinations and perspectives that marry the surreal with the real, the imagined with the tangible. By leveraging AI, I hope to push the boundaries of traditional juxtaposition and surrealism, exploring more nuanced and complex contrasts inspired by my favorite surrealism artists.

My approach to creating this series involves a blend of planning, experimentation, and reflection. I will begin with a brainstorming phase, where I identify potential themes and contrasts to explore. Following this, I will engage in the creation phase, where the actual production of images and videos takes place. AI tools will be utilized here to enhance creativity and efficiency. The final phase involves curating the series, selecting the most impactful works that best represent my exploration of juxtaposition and surrealism.

One anticipated challenge is finding the right balance between the contrasting elements and the surreal aspects so that they complement rather than overshadow each other. To address this, I will rely on iterative feedback, both from AI insights and peer reviews. Another challenge is the technical aspect of integrating AI into my creative process, especially when aiming to incorporate elements of surrealism. This final project is more than just an assignment; it’s a journey into the heart of juxtaposition and surrealism, concepts that fascinate me. Through the creation of a series of images and videos, I aim to explore the depths of contrast and the surreal, inspired by the works of artists like Salvador Dali and Otto D’Ambra. This exploration, supported by the innovative use of AI, represents not only my growth in this class but also my evolution as a creator. As I embark on this odyssey, I look forward to the discoveries that await and the creative potential that lies within the interplay of juxtaposition and surrealism.

What is missing in the Omega Team scenario?

What I think is missing in the Omega Team scenario is the end goal of all of this work by the Omegas. What plan did they have after essentially conquering the world? It also makes me wonder if this Omega team went into the project with good morals and ethics, or if their plan all along was world domination and control of society. It is also missing anybody asking questions about their organization or looking further into Omega and its companies. If there was somebody or a group of people or even a government, what was their plan to stop them? Would Prometheus instruct them on how to essentially get rid of their problem, and would it be violent? I also think that human control over the A.I. was missing. Instead, it felt like Prometheus was running the Omegas, and not the other way around.

What went wrong? 

I think one thing that went wrong, and I mentioned this earlier, was that Prometheus ended up running the Omegas, and I think that was by mistake from the Omega team. It seemed like the Omegas got too comfortable with how Prometheus was providing everything for them, and in my opinion, it eventually took over, just like it took over society. 

What do we need to do to avoid the undesirable outcomes and maximize potential desirable outcomes?

The thought is nice of a utopian world, where social services are providing for the community, and equal access to healthcare, education and a world without conflict exist, but at what cost? I think that the undesirable outcome that may lead to a dystopian world through this scenario is that the world is being run like a simulation or a computer program. Controlled by an all-knowing computer and a small team of minions that completes the tasks that Prometheus has given them. There is an extreme human disconnect from what ends up running the world and the people that have to live in it. I think one way to maximize the desirable outcomes would be to make the A.I. work for you and not the other way around.
