Research statement (writing 1)

Introduction

When I first started this project, I was not sure where to begin. I had many ideas but could not decide on one. I knew I wanted to do something related to art because it has always been important to me and something I consistently practice. However, figuring out how exactly I was going to use AI was difficult to figure out. I am interested in art so naturally I went in the direction of visual arts.

AI Interest & class

My interest in AI is mostly from curiosity about what it is and what it means in terms of art. AI has obviously greatly impacted many fields but particularly ones that have creativity. I’d like to be able to use AI to see directly how it impacts art and how it can enhance  art. I would like to learn how I can use AI to better improve my art and how to integrate to simplify tasks.

As for AI itself and the class I think that AI is revolutionary and the future honestly. I want to learn about how AI self-works and how it compares to the human brain. How information is generated or the sourcing of materials. I also think that simply playing and testing diverse types of AI services would be interesting to experiment with.

Research goals

I would say the primary goal for my research is to experiment with how integrating AI into my creative process can expand my creativity. Creativity is a loosely used term, but in the context of this I mean artistic abilities and possibilities. I would say I have a vivid imagination and the ability to make art but where I struggle at times is to give my ideas a visual representation. It feels as though there is a gap between me making art and the idea itself. This is where I’m hoping AI can assist me, by making a bridge between this gap. What I would like to do is have AI enhance my ideas and art to become a better artist.

Research ideas/approaches

I don’t think I have a very concrete plan at the moment for the direction I’d like to go in. But I do have a rough idea of what actions I’ll be taking to learn more about AI with respect to art. I will try to be very adaptive as I go but something I will be doing is providing the AI with concepts. Although that sounds quite broad, providing AI with a range of themes, emotions, and artistic styles will allow me to explore art quickly. And like I said before I will be asking AI to give visual representations of my ideas, from which I can then use as a starting point for making art.

Of course, this process is not linear; it involves continuous interaction and refinement between me and the AI. I’m also interested in having AI respond to my art whether it be sketches or rendered out works. I am curious to see what types of responses it will come up with. I’d like to see how it can enhance those pieces or change them to further transform it. I’m curious about whether it can produce works in the style it. I hope to get a deeper understanding of the capabilities of the AI as well as how I can improve my art and process.

Intended results/project

I anticipate this class will significantly expand my imaginativeness and artistic process with the use of AI. I aim to develop a more refined approach as I am experimenting and integrating the AI’s suggestions into my artistic workflow. I don’t have a specific idea for the final project although I’m possibly thinking perhaps a gallery like project. A series of artworks that represent a harmonious blend of my personal creativity and AI-assisted design.

Crystallia: Realms of Resonance Writing Assignment #2

Intro:

At first, I was unsure what I wanted to create as a short story but an idea came to me when I saw my mom’s interesting crystal collection…

So I gave ChatGPT this prompt:

“give me a short fiction story involving a vast land of different crystal kingdoms (like amethyst city or pearl district) and a potential war brewing between garnet and sapphire kingdoms 300 words please”
And this is what it produced:

In the realm of Crystallia, a land of shimmering beauty, lay kingdoms each unique in their splendor. Amethyst City glowed with a soft violet light, while the Pearl District shimmered with an iridescent sheen. But amidst this beauty, tension simmered between two mighty realms: the Garnet Kingdom and the Sapphire Empire.

The Garnet Kingdom, ruled by the fiery Queen Rubra, was a land of deep red canyons and towering garnet spires. Its people were passionate and fierce, their hearts burning with the same intensity as the stones they cherished. In contrast, the Sapphire Empire, under the cool and calculated Emperor Azure, was a realm of tranquility. It boasted sprawling cities of cobalt and azure, with serene sapphire waters reflecting the calm demeanor of its citizens.

For centuries, these kingdoms coexisted peacefully, their differences balanced by mutual respect and the intricate trade of their precious crystals. However, the discovery of a rare crystal, the Twilight Stone, capable of amplifying a kingdom’s power, disrupted this harmony. Both the Garnet Kingdom and the Sapphire Empire laid claim to the stone, believing it rightfully theirs.

As tensions escalated, Queen Rubra and Emperor Azure met at the Crystal Conclave, a neutral zone, to negotiate. Rubra, with her fiery spirit, argued for Garnet’s right to the stone, citing ancient legends. Azure, ever the strategist, presented claims of historical ownership by the Sapphires. The debate grew heated, with neither side willing to relent.

In Crystallia, whispers of war began to spread. The other kingdoms, like the serene Pearl District and the radiant Amethyst City, watched with growing concern. They feared the potential destruction that such a war could bring to their crystalline world.

The fate of Crystallia hung in the balance, as two of its mightiest kingdoms stood on the brink of conflict, their futures as uncertain as the shimmering facets of the crystals they adored.

My thoughts:

This was just what I wanted! However, there is always room for improvement. So I asked it to change the language of the story to a fantasy genre style, talk more about the kingdoms of Crystallia in the beginning paragraph, and elaborate on the two opposing kingdoms and their leaders historical tensions to start off.

I then told it it could be between 300-1000 words

This is what it wrote:

In the vast realm of Crystallia, a land where the essence of magic weaves through the very fabric of nature, stand the majestic Crystal Kingdoms. Each kingdom, unique in its splendor and governed by its precious stone, thrives on the diversity of its lands and peoples. The Amethyst City, nestled in the heart of the mountains, is renowned for its scholars and mystics, its markets filled with potent potions and arcane scrolls. The Pearl District, with its shimmering coastline, is a haven for artists and dreamers, trading in exquisite pearls that inspire beauty and peace. The Emerald Enclave, a lush expanse of verdant forests, is the source of the world’s most potent medicinal herbs and a sanctuary for those who seek to heal and protect. The Topaz Territory, under the relentless sun, dazzles with its craftsmen and jewelers, offering goods carved from the sunstone that gleam with the light of endless days.

Amidst this mosaic of harmony, the Garnet Kingdom and the Sapphire Empire have always stood apart, their histories intertwined with threads of disdain and rivalry. The Garnet Kingdom, ruled by the fiery Queen Rubra, is a land of deep red canyons and towering garnet spires. Its people are passionate and fierce, their strength unparalleled in the realm. They trade in weapons forged from garnet, unmatched in their sharpness and durability. The Sapphire Empire, under the cool rule of Emperor Azure, is a realm of tranquility and wisdom. Its serene sapphire waters are the source of the finest textiles in Crystallia, woven from fibers that shimmer with the depth of the ocean.

For centuries, these two kingdoms have maintained a precarious peace, their differences fueling a silent enmity. The Garnet Kingdom, with its martial prowess, has always viewed the Sapphire Empire’s emphasis on diplomacy and scholarship as weakness. Conversely, the Sapphire Empire sees the Garnet Kingdom’s aggression and pride as barbaric relics of a bygone era. This mutual disdain is rooted in a legend, a tale of a time when both kingdoms were one under the banner of the Crystal Empire. A division arose over the Twilight Stone, a crystal of immense power said to hold the essence of Crystallia itself. The empire fractured, giving birth to the Garnet Kingdom and the Sapphire Empire, each believing they were the rightful guardians of the stone.

The Twilight Stone’s disappearance has only fueled their rivalry, with each side accusing the other of hoarding its power. Despite their differences, both kingdoms have worked to keep peace, understanding that a war could shatter Crystallia. Treaties have been signed, and marriages between the royal families have been arranged, all in the hope of bridging the gap between them. Yet, the peace is fragile, a veneer that could crack at the slightest provocation.

Now, whispers of war begin to stir once more. An incident at the border, a skirmish that left soldiers from both sides dead, threatens to unravel the threads of peace that have held for so long. Queen Rubra and Emperor Azure, both proud and unyielding, find themselves at a crossroads. They must choose between the path of war, which could doom Crystallia to an age of darkness, or seek a reconciliation that could heal the deep wounds of their past.

As the realm of Crystallia watches with bated breath, the other kingdoms prepare for the worst. The Emerald Enclave strengthens its defenses, the Pearl District calls for peace, and the Amethyst City seeks wisdom in the stars. The fate of Crystallia hangs in the balance, its future tethered to the decisions of two rulers who must confront their prejudices and the legacy of their ancestors.

Will the Garnet Kingdom and the Sapphire Empire forge a new chapter in their history, or will they succumb to the shadows of their past, igniting a conflict that could consume the world? Only time will tell, as the saga of Crystallia unfolds, a testament to the power of unity and the enduring spirit of its people.

My thoughts:

After reading this second edit of the story, I liked what it produced this time given that it followed my instructions on making it more of a fantasy genre style and elaborating on the stories of two opposing kingdoms. However, I feel as though the reason of conflict such as the Twilight Stone was kinda vague so I asked it to provide more context of the history of the stone and how the two empires split.

What it gave me:

What are now the Garnet Kingdom and the Sapphire Empire were once united under a single banner, the Crystal Empire. This empire was divided due to a conflict over the Twilight Stone, a powerful artifact believed to hold the essence of Crystallia itself. The division was not just territorial but also ideological, reflecting the deep-seated differences between the peoples of the two kingdoms, which eventually led to the formation of the distinct Garnet Kingdom and Sapphire Empire. This backstory adds depth to their rivalry and the historical tensions between them, explaining the roots of their mutual disdain and the challenges they face in maintaining peace.

Asked for more context:

Before the division, the unified realm was known as the **Crystal Empire**, a magnificent domain that spanned the entirety of what is now the Garnet Kingdom and the Sapphire Empire, along with the territories of the other crystal kingdoms. The Crystal Empire was a beacon of unity, strength, and prosperity, revered across Crystallia for its harmony and the wisdom of its rulers. At the heart of the empire’s power was the Twilight Stone, a legendary crystal believed to be the source of the land’s magic and prosperity.

The split occurred due to a cataclysmic event rooted in the discovery of the Twilight Stone’s deeper powers. Legend has it that the Twilight Stone was not just a source of magic but also a key to unparalleled power and knowledge, capable of shaping the destiny of Crystallia. The revelation of its true potential led to a schism within the empire’s ruling council, with two factions emerging: one led by the ancestors of what would become the Garnet Kingdom, advocating for the use of the stone to expand the empire’s dominion and enhance its military might; the other, the forebears of the Sapphire Empire, insisting that the stone’s power should be used for enlightenment, knowledge, and the betterment of all Crystallia’s inhabitants.

As tensions escalated, the disagreement turned into open conflict, with each faction seeking to control the Twilight Stone. The strife culminated in the Battle of Dusk and Dawn, a fierce confrontation that took place at the twilight hour, symbolizing the clash between the day’s light and night’s darkness. The battle ended in a stalemate, with the Twilight Stone mysteriously vanishing during the conflict, rumored to have been hidden or lost to prevent its power from being misused.

In the aftermath, the Crystal Empire was no more, fracturing into two major realms: the Garnet Kingdom, embracing the values of strength, courage, and the pursuit of power; and the Sapphire Empire, upholding the principles of wisdom, diplomacy, and the quest for knowledge. This division sowed the seeds of a rivalry that has persisted through the ages, fueled by the legend of the Twilight Stone and the differing ideologies of the two kingdoms. Despite their shared heritage, the Garnet Kingdom and the Sapphire Empire have since walked divergent paths, each shaped by the values and beliefs of their ancestors, forever altering the tapestry of Crystallia.

Final thoughts:

With the edits I asked it to make and the context it provided on the two opposing kingdoms, I feel like this story can now continue and I am very invested in it already and would like to see this as a film one day… :’)

Nyssa and the Orb of Nightfall: Chronicles of Equilibrium

I started this story by asking my Research GPT to give me examples of guidelines to create a good story. I then used those parameters and choose the theme, characters, plot outline, etc. and had the GPT write the initial story for me. As I read through each variation of the story, I asked the GPT to change certain elements like the scenery, appearance and personality of characters, and more. I also had the GPT elaborate or shorten certain plot points to create a better flow within the story. The following is the final result:

In the mystical heart of Eldoria, where ancient magics weave the tapestry of existence, Nyssa, a young elf with hair like woven moonbeams and eyes deep as the forest’s secrets, embarked on a quest not just of destiny, but of self-discovery. Born to a lineage revered for their command of light magic, her life in the Sylvan Woods was one of beauty and expectation. The Woods, a place where trees whispered ancient secrets and rivers sang melodies of old magic, was her home. Yet, it was a home that felt like a gilded cage, her parents, Aelar and Miriel, imposing strict control, envisioning her future as an extension of their legacy, alongside her compliant siblings, Caelum and Elara.

Nyssa’s spirit, however, yearned for balance, for the untold stories hidden in the shadows cast by the light her family wielded so fervently. It was this yearning that led her to Eirik, a clumsy yet endearing cyclops whose presence sparked an unusual allergy in Nyssa, yet whose singular perspective revealed the world in hues she’d never imagined. Together, they ventured beyond the familiar, driven by the theft of the Orb of Nightfall from the Temple of Equilibrium, a relic whose absence threatened to tilt the world into perpetual darkness.

Their journey was a tapestry of encounters that shaped their path. Finn, the bard, whose melodies pierced the fog of uncertainty, and Aria, the witch, whose potions promised to steady their steps, were but waypoints in their quest to understand the essence of balance. The Temple of Equilibrium, accessible only to those who mastered the cosmic cha-cha slide, stood atop Harmony Hills, a testament to the dance of light and dark. Its ancient stones and celestial statues spoke of a time when magic was not a force to be wielded but a partner in the dance of existence.

The heart of their quest lay in the confrontation with Malakar, an undead warlock treant whose roots delved into the very essence of magic’s duality. Malakar, twisted by his own despair and loss, sought to engulf the world in shadow, a reflection of his inner turmoil. It was in the depths of the Shattered Peaks, amidst the ruins of his lair, that Nyssa and Eirik faced him, not with the might of magic, but with the strength of understanding.

“Malakar,” Nyssa began, her voice steady despite the sneezes Eirik’s proximity induced, “why seek to drown the world in darkness? Is there not beauty in the balance, in the dance between light and dark?”

Malakar’s response, a rustle of leaves and a whisper of wind, spoke of a heart long hardened by isolation. “The world has forgotten the dance. It bathes in light, ignorant of the shadows it casts. Why should I not show them the depth of their neglect?”

Eirik, stumbling forward with a bowl of his beloved almond-flavored ‘pistachio’ pudding, offered a spoon to Malakar. “Maybe ’cause in the dark, you can’t see the awesome stuff. Like this pudding. Looks weird, tastes amazing. Plus, dancing in the dark is just bumping into stuff.”

The absurdity of the moment, the earnestness in Eirik’s gesture, and the sincerity in Nyssa’s plea, cracked the armor Malakar had built around himself. Here, before him, stood an elf and a cyclops, embodying the balance he had lost faith in. They did not deny the darkness but embraced it as part of the whole.

“It is not the absence of light that we fear, but the absence of balance,” Nyssa continued, her words weaving around Malakar like a gentle spell. “You, who have known both light and dark, possess the power to restore what was lost, not through dominance, but through understanding.”

Moved by their conviction, Malakar realized that his quest for darkness had blinded him to the true nature of balance. In Nyssa’s quest, he saw a reflection of his own, twisted by grief and loss. Surrendering the Orb of Nightfall to Nyssa, he chose to step into the light of understanding, guided by the very beings he had sought to oppose.

Nyssa and Eirik, with the Orb restored, danced the cha-cha slide as a symbol of their journey, a dance that echoed through the temple and into the heart of Eldoria. Their return to the Sylvan Woods was not just a triumphant march but a declaration of a new beginning, one where balance reigned, and the dance between light and dark was celebrated.

Nyssa’s confrontation with her parents, upon her return, was a moment of revelation. She stood before them, not as the child they sought to mold but as the guardian of balance she had become. Her journey, marked by sneezes, laughter, and the discovery of self, reshaped her destiny and that of Eldoria.

Her tale, woven with the threads of understanding, friendship, and the cosmic dance of existence, became a legend. It was a story that transcended the confines of light and dark, teaching that the essence of magic, and of life, lies in the harmony of contrasts, in the beauty of the dance, and in the joy of almond-flavored pistachio pudding shared among friends, under the watchful eye of the moon.

Writing Exercise #2

Introduction

To start developing this story, I started playing exquisite corpse with ChatGPT. I allowed it to start off and it came up with “A mysterious key lay in the middle of the road, shimmering under the moonlight.” and thats when I thought I would go down a more silly route. Thats when I added a raccoon that found the key. Thats what created the base of the story, that the story would revolve around a raccoon that was granted powers upon finding the key. I went back and forth with the GPT about 10 times, each writing sentences until a base was formed. I them had the AI write the story, and the first story was very short and vague. I had to continue to revise and edit the story until it produced something close to what I was looking for. The final product is what I have posted, but there is definitely room for more revision and editing that could further enhance the story.

Whiskerlock’s Quest: The Tale of the Enchanted Key

In the shadow of an ancient forest, where moonlight barely kissed the winding path, lay a mysterious key, shimmering with an otherworldly glow. This was no ordinary key; it was imbued with magic from a time long forgotten, waiting for someone—or something—to unlock its secrets.

A raccoon, drawn to the key’s luminescence, approached with caution. The moment its paw made contact, a surge of power radiated through the night. In that instant, the raccoon was transformed. Granted the power to understand and speak the human tongue, the raccoon felt a deep, instinctual urge to name himself—a name that would reflect his newfound destiny. He chose “Whiskerlock,” symbolizing his sharp instincts and the key that unlocked his fate. “Whiskerlock,” he tested the name, his voice a curious blend of rasp and melody, “a fitting name for a journey yet unwritten.”

With the key, Whiskerlock discovered he could open rifts in space and time, a power that beckoned him toward an ancient legend. This legend told of a treasure that had once granted raccoons unparalleled abilities. But why was such a powerful treasure hidden away?

Long ago, the treasure was created by ancient beings to foster harmony between all creatures of the forest, giving them the ability to communicate and understand each other. However, as time passed, this power was coveted by those who sought to dominate the forest, leading to strife and conflict. To protect the forest and its inhabitants, the treasure was sealed away, accessible only to one who possessed a pure heart and the wisdom to use its power for the good of all.

Determined, Whiskerlock set out, the key guiding him to the first rift. He stepped into a realm where magic was as tangible as the air he breathed, and where ancient ruins whispered secrets of civilizations long gone. His quest was fraught with challenges, each a test of his courage, wit, and resolve.

However, Whiskerlock was not alone in his pursuit. An evil sorcerer known as Grimwhisper, who wielded dark and powerful magic, also sought the treasure for his own sinister purposes. Grimwhisper had learned of Whiskerlock’s quest and aimed to use the raccoon to navigate the dangers that lay ahead, intending to seize the treasure at the journey’s end.

Whiskerlock’s journey took him through enchanted forests where trees whispered ancient spells, across desolate plains shrouded in perpetual twilight, and into the depths of caverns where the air shimmered with latent magic. In each place, he uncovered fragments of lore that hinted at the treasure’s location, solving puzzles that had baffled adventurers for eons.

Grimwhisper, ever a shadow on Whiskerlock’s trail, sent minions to thwart the raccoon’s progress. These encounters tested Whiskerlock’s agility and intellect, as he had to outsmart creatures of darkness and traps imbued with malicious enchantments. Yet, with each victory, Whiskerlock’s resolve strengthened, his connection to the key deepening, granting him insight into the very fabric of magic itself.

Despite the looming threat of Grimwhisper, Whiskerlock’s journey was also one of alliances and discovery. He befriended a wise owl, whose insights helped him navigate the perilous path and evade Grimwhisper’s minions. Together, they faced guardians of the legend, solved ancient puzzles, and overcame trials that tested Whiskerlock’s heart and spirit.

The climax of Whiskerlock’s adventure unfolded in a chamber as old as time itself, guarded by a mythical creature and Grimwhisper, who had finally caught up, eager to claim his prize. A fierce battle ensued, with Whiskerlock’s cunning and the bonds he’d formed pitted against Grimwhisper’s dark magic.

In the end, it was Whiskerlock’s pure heart and the unexpected aid of the creatures he had helped along his journey that overwhelmed Grimwhisper, forcing the sorcerer into retreat. The guardian, recognizing Whiskerlock’s valor and purity, allowed him to approach the treasure.

Upon claiming the treasure, a wave of magic restored the abilities of raccoons across the world. Whiskerlock returned not just as a hero, but as a legend, a raccoon who, with the help of friends and his own cunning, overcame darkness to bring a new dawn to his kind.

Thus, the tale of Whiskerlock and the magical key became a timeless story, celebrated across generations for its heroism, unity, and the raccoon at its heart, who chose a name that would forever symbolize hope, courage, and adventure.

The Essence of Earth – (Writing Exercise #2)

Initial inputs fed to ChatGPT: passages from Moby Dick, the Bible, and the Heart Sutra.

In the midst of a canvas, undefined,
Sublimity and mystery intertwined.
A gale over the Black Sea at midnight,
Where elements in unnatural fight,
On a blasted heath, winter’s ice unbound,
Time’s stream breaking, where no time is found.

Behold, the sixth seal breaks, earth quakes,
The sun darkens, the moon blood-awakes.
Stars fall like untimely figs from high,
The heavens roll, mountains and islands fly.

The Bodhisattva, in deep contemplation,
Saw emptiness in all creation.
The skandhas five, void, without a chain,
Releasing suffering, breaking pain.

Form and emptiness, in dance, entwine,
Each the other, in essence, divine.
Feeling, thought, choice, consciousness,
All in emptiness, find their rest.

Nature’s core, void, unmarred, unstained,
Not born, nor destroyed, unchanged, unchained.
In the vast void, no form to discern,
No sense, no feeling, nothing to yearn.

No eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind,
No color, taste, touch, sound defined.
Nothing for the mind to hold or miss,
No act of sensing, no world of bliss.

A picture, a prophecy, a state of zen,
Merging in chaos, again and again.
A leviathan in shadows, or a cosmic play,
Each a fragment, in disarray.

In this mosaic of verses, see,
The vast tapestry of mystery.
A poem of fragments, of visions bold,
In words, the universe’s story told.

In this canvas of time and space,
Each sentence, a fragment, finds its place.
A creation, a destruction, a rebirth,
In these words, the essence of Earth.

Writing Exercise #2

Background:
I went with the short story route and my first approach was to ask chat GPT to randomly give me a theme to base my short story around and it gave me the theme of “Rediscovering Childhood Memories.” I then prompted it to write a story based on that theme and center it around one main character and to choose the name for the main character. It proceeded to write the story with a main character of the name “Amelia”. The story was light and fitting to the theme, so I played around with the N+7 method but it really didn’t make sense to what it generated so I discarded that. I then played with the lipogram method and figured quickly that using this method is really not good as it doesn’t really follow the instructions of removing a letter or and I even told it to rewrite the story without using a certain word and it still did use what I told it to not use. So I then discarded that and thought of including a tone into the story so I prompted it to rewrite the story utilizing a horror tone. For this it was a successful trial as it did a good job of rewriting the story with that tone in it but what I noticed is that it took away the ‘innocent and happy’ memories of childhood in the story when it was prompted to turn the story into a horror tone and turned it really dark and almost trauma dumping. So I went back and prompted it to rewrite the story while keeping the childhood memories of the character innocent and special and have a happy ending at the end. This prompt helped direct the story to what I asked and just for funsies I ended it by prompting it to turn this story into a song which is below. This exercise helped me learn how chat gpt often needs to be reminded again of what exactly you want as the more you prompt new things, sometimes things you priorly prompted will get overwritten. I found it best to be very clear on what you want and how sometimes chat gpt will get confused if you prompt sometiming you told it to not do priorly. There was a lot of editing and rewriting with this story so it shows how much of AI still needs to be revised and not just something you can just prompt to do, there still needs human touch for clarification and direction to a story.

Title: “Whispers of Innocence”
(Verse 1)
In a town cloaked in shadows, there is Amelia,
Her life is filled with worries, lost in the game.
Her days were consumed by a relentless race,
Her childhood’s sweet laughter had vanished without a trace.

(Chorus)
One haunting night, a call from the past,
Lucy’s voice, eerie, inviting her so fast.
To the hometown, they’d once left behind.

(Verse 2)
Reluctantly, she embarked on this eerie quest,
To a foggy town, where shadows never rest.
The oak tree standing, ancient and dark,
Where whispered secrets stirred a forgotten spark.

(Chorus)
In a weathered chest, secrets of their youth,
Letters, drawings, and a twisted truth.
Their innocence tainted, by a sinister force,
Yet their friendship held, of course.

(Bridge)
Amidst the horror, they laughed and cried,
As the darkness around them seemed to subside.
They ventured deeper, the cursed woods they’d explore,
To confront their fears, to close the dark door.

(Chorus)
With a diary’s guidance and friendship,
Banishing the darkness, breaking the norm.
The town square bathed in an ethereal light,
Their innocence restored, the curse taking flight.

(Verse 3)
Beneath the oak tree, now vibrant and bright,
They’d conquered the darkness, embraced the light.
Haunted memories, they’d forever defy,
As the morning sun rose in the sky.

(Chorus)
Back to their lives, in the city so wide,
Carrying the memories of that haunting ride.
With a bond unbroken, they’d cherish the past,
In the face of darkness, their friendship would last.

(Outro)
As years passed, to the oak tree they’d tend,
A symbol of childhood, a bond that won’t end.
Innocence endured, a story of might,
Even in the darkness, they found the light.

Concerns and Pondering

Blog Prompt: After reading the essay above, discuss your personal concerns about AI in the visual arts and in visual culture in general. What can artists/creators do with AI tools to address or respond to these personal and collective concerns about machine creativity?

AI, much like the first cameras, is a tool. A tool cannot operate itself. Cameras don’t take photos without a human setting them up. An AI bot cannot make an image without first some form of human input.

However, it seems like people fear that we’re getting close to a place where that isn’t so true. It also seems like we’re getting to a place that scares the sensibilities of human creators. Like scraping the internet to form datasets created by these people.

It also seems like visual artists and writers approach this fear of AI very differently. Visual artists appear much more scared of their artworks being used non-consensually. It looks like writers are more in line with feeding their own artwork to a bot and recycling with it.

Not only is non-consensual using of work to create data not cool, underfeeding AI is not cool (but of course we care more about people than a machine). If AI is to flourish and reach its potential, then shouldn’t it be opened up to as much as it can?

Based on the article, prompt, and human writing above, ChatGPT gave us this to finish us out:

“The concerns surrounding AI in the visual arts echo a broader unease about machine creativity’s impact on human originality and intellectual property rights. This tension is particularly pronounced in how artists from different disciplines—visual artists and writers, for instance—view the potential of AI to repurpose their creations without consent. The fear that AI could dilute the uniqueness of human-made art or exploit it unethically underscores the need for a balanced approach to AI integration in creative processes.

To address these concerns, artists and creators can proactively engage with AI as a collaborative tool, rather than a replacement. This involves understanding the capabilities and limitations of AI, ensuring ethical use of data, and advocating for legal frameworks that protect artists’ rights while fostering innovation. By doing so, creators can harness AI to expand their creative horizons, experiment with new forms of expression, and contribute to the evolution of visual culture in a way that respects the essence of human creativity.

Embracing AI in art isn’t just about adapting to new technologies; it’s about redefining the creative process in a way that enhances human input rather than diminishing it. As we navigate these changes, the focus should be on how AI can complement and augment human creativity, ensuring that the art of the future remains diverse, innovative, and deeply human.”

A Poem Embrace We

These are two different nonsensical ‘poems’ created by different processes in ChatGPT.

A Poem Embrace We

A poem embrace we, unique confidence in its building and blocks,

Meaning blocks garlic without making intricate conversation of lollipop.

Unconventionally seen, carrot with pieces, heart the in visual,

Business with methods daily adding, elements testing.

And toilet, serially we examine exponents,

Import we dance, vertices capture our inspiration.

Fly automatically mild like a coupon river,

Tax without regenerating their fossilized emotions.

To Settle an Unknown Land

In lands unveiled, where horizons grandly sweep,

‘Neath boundless skies, where ancient whispers seep.

Where once the heart might wander and roam,

Seeking the wild, far from home.

Now in each step, a sense of place does grow,

With each known sight, fondness begins to show.

Beside the river, its course a steady guide,

Its rhythmic flow, where calmness resides.

With each meander, my pulse finds its pace,

In the river’s twist, echoes of my space.

Its waters shape the land, and subtly, my view,

Mirroring life, in its surface true.

Amidst the forest, where canopy and light dance,

Life’s verdant symphony performed in tranquil trance.

Each tree’s arch, nature’s resilience taught,

Roots entwined with mine, in quiet thought.

Here, in the woodland’s calm repose, my step slows,

In the forest’s embrace, my serenity flows.

On trails well-trodden, where legacies intertwine,

The earth cradles the steps of those before mine.

Each dusty mile, a tapestry unfurled,

A rich communion with the pulse of the world.

In every journey, connections new and old,

On this shared path, my story is told.

Under the canvas of the cosmic sea,

Night’s gentle veil reveals its mystery.

The stars’ silent stories, told in sparkling code,

Speak of a unity in their heavenly abode.

In the night’s soft cradle, my dreams are spun,

As stars watch over me, till the rise of sun.

In this wild embrace, where life’s tapestry interlaces,

Each day’s pattern, the land’s breath traces.

A kinship with the earth, a dance heart to heart,

In nature’s grand design, I play my part.

In closeness with the vast, a harmony’s sound,

Here, in every inch, my home is profoundly bound.

The Process

This poem was fun to work out because I wanted to play with the theme of finding someone you love so much that you find even more beauty after you get to know them like the back of your hand. This is significant, because I had to frame my prompts in a very specific way. I didn’t want This theme to be outwardly expressed, which defeats the whole point of if it being a poem, but if I didn’t mention it, the outputs I was getting didn’t match the theme. To resolve this, I have to prompt the poem to have the metaphorical outcome instead of the outcome that matched the actual message and theme I was going for. This took a lot of time and tweaking. I also found this very interesting because even though the GPT can write passible poems, it was really hard to ask it to incorporate and idea implicitly. I had to also frame it implicitly in order for it to get the result I want.

Short fiction (Writing #2)

Title: Harmony’s Edge

In Aethertech, a city where the future shimmered in neon and ancient magic whispered through the winds, two figures stood against the pulsing backdrop of the Harmony Power Plant. Aurion Blade, clad in armor laced with glowing circuits, and Sylph Mystic, draped in robes adorned with mystical runes, faced each other with a mix of curiosity and apprehension.

Aurion had come tracing technological disturbances that pointed to potential sabotage within the plant. A man of logic and precision, he viewed technology as a beacon of human advancement. In Sylph, with her connection to the arcane, he saw an echo of a past that risked hindering progress.

Conversely, Sylph was drawn by a disruption in the magical energies integral to the city’s life. She saw Aurion, with his mechanical methods, as perhaps ignorant of the deeper, elemental forces at play.

Their initial exchange was tense, each asserting their perspective.

“You tread on grounds you do not understand, Aurion,” Sylph’s voice echoed with power. “This is not a mere machine malfunction. The spirits within are distressed.”

“And you think your spells can fix advanced technology?” Aurion countered, his voice steady and firm. “We need logic and precision here, not ancient rituals.”

As they argued, the core’s energy fluctuated wildly. Both set to work – Aurion interfacing with the control systems, Sylph weaving her magic into the core’s fabric. However, their individual efforts inadvertently clashed, leading to a surge of energy that knocked them both to the ground.

In that moment, the core emitted a distressing sound, a blend of mechanical and mystical dissonance. It began to fracture, fissures emanating both sparks and ethereal glimmers. Aurion felt the core’s structural integrity failing, realizing that his technological overrides were exacerbating its instability. Similarly, Sylph sensed a painful dissonance in the magical currents, recognizing that her suppression of the technological aspects was destabilizing the core.

The impending collapse of the core mirrored their own conflict. Aurion turned to Sylph, acknowledging their mutual error. “Our conflict is tearing the core apart. We can’t keep fighting each other.”

“We’re both to blame,” Sylph agreed. “This core needs both elements to function, just like the city.”

Faced with the potential destruction of Aethertech, they realized that embracing the city’s essence – the harmony of technology and magic – was the only path forward.

“Your magic and my technology,” Aurion proposed, offering his hand, “working together.”

Sylph accepted, her magical aura intertwining with the glow of his armor. “Let’s restore balance, together.”

Their combined efforts led to the creation of a new form of energy, an amalgam of technology and magic that stabilized the core. The city, oblivious to how close it had come to disaster, continued its vibrant life.

Post-crisis, a newfound respect emerged between them. “We have much to learn from each other,” Aurion admitted.

“And perhaps, together, we can prevent such threats in the future,” Sylph added, hopeful.

Their alliance became a beacon in Aethertech, a symbol of coexistence between different worlds. Aurion Blade and Sylph Mystic, once at odds, now stood united as guardians of the city’s unique harmony.

Whispers of their collaboration spread, inspiring tales of the technopath and the sorceress who bridged worlds for the greater good. It marked the beginning of a journey towards a future where science and sorcery coexisted in harmony, guided by two unlikely allies who had transcended their differences to protect their beloved city.

A fictional story (writing 2)

Introduction

For this creative writing assignment, I didn’t know exactly where to start but I was thinking about making a story because I’m not too familiar with scripts or poems. I began with looking for songs to sample from to then remix into a story, I took diverse songs from multiple time frames. I asked for GPT to disperse the lyrics, but it seemed to not be able to do the task and kept the stanzas of the lyrics. I began with it making a story but then I though of making it into a fairy tale but I didn’t like any of the stories because it seemed too generic. All the stories that GPT generated were kind of bland and were all romances I had to specify to not make it a romance. Given the mix of lyrics the story was little dark but kept asking to make it darker and eventually and made it a horror story which I thought was much more interesting.

Subway’s Abyss (story as named by Chat GPT)

Beneath the city’s bustling streets, a forgotten network of abandoned subway tunnels lay in a state of decay and disrepair. These tunnels, shrouded in darkness, had become a breeding ground for nightmares, and four souls found themselves ensnared in a malevolent force that threatened to consume them.

Alice, a solitary traveler seeking refuge from the city’s chaos, ventured into the depths of the subway system. Her footsteps echoed eerily in the desolate corridors, and the air grew colder with each passing moment. An ominous presence seemed to linger just out of sight, and she whispered to the shadows, “Here I am, there you are, why does it seem so far?” Her voice trembled as she felt an unseen entity draw closer, its breath cold against her neck.

David, a tormented musician, strummed his guitar with desperation in a tune that sent shivers down the spine of anyone who heard it. His song was not a call for a hero but a lament for the tormented souls trapped within the subterranean nightmare. The dissonant chords reverberated through the tunnels, creating a cacophony that echoed like the anguished cries of the damned.

Sophie, a woman with a dark and hidden past, was pursued relentlessly by a faceless entity that seemed to exist solely to torment her. The malicious whispers of her pursuer filled her ears, accusing her of sins she couldn’t recall committing. “So you should turn back to your rat pack, tell ’em I’m trash, tell all of your friends that I’m crazy and drive you mad,” the voice taunted, growing more menacing with each word.

Mark, a relentless investigator, had become a prisoner of his own obsession. He had been tracking Sophie through the labyrinthine tunnels, determined to uncover the truth at any cost. The walls closed in around him as he ventured deeper into the abyss, mirroring the suffocating grip of his fixation.

As the night wore on, the horrors of the subway tunnels intensified. Alice’s glimpses of the sinister figure in the shadows became more frequent, revealing a grotesque visage that haunted her nightmares. David’s music took on a discordant and maddening tone, driving those who heard it to the brink of insanity. Sophie’s pursuer manifested as a grotesque apparition, its malevolent presence twisting the very fabric of reality. And Mark’s relentless pursuit led him to uncover a nightmarish truth about the subway’s history, a truth he was ill-prepared to face.

The subway tunnels became a labyrinthine maze of terror, where time and space seemed to warp and shift. The darkness swallowed the four lost souls, and their pleas for salvation were met with eerie silence. The tunnels themselves seemed to come alive, their walls closing in and shifting with a mind of their own.

In the end, the four lost souls were consumed by the darkness, their fates sealed by the malevolent forces that lurked within the subway’s depths. Their screams echoed through the tunnels, a chilling symphony of despair that resonated in the darkest corners of the city.

As the subway tunnels descended into an eternal abyss, the horror continued, a never-ending nightmare from which there was no escape. The darkness claimed them all, leaving only the chilling memory of their twisted and tortured souls forever trapped in the subway’s haunted depths.

My Personal Concerns in the AI Artistic World (Blog 4)

Diving into the world where art meets technology, I’m excited to share my journey with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the realm of visual arts and culture. It’s a world rife with possibilities and, admittedly, a few challenges. With AI beginning to craft artwork that amazes us with their complexity and beauty, it’s time for some real talk about creativity, ethics, and the cultural impact AI is making. In this blog post, I’m sharing my concerns with AI in the visual arts and offering my own ideas about how we, as artists and creators, can navigate these waters, ensuring technology amplifies our creative spirit rather than overshadowing it.

Concerns

Authenticity

One concern is how AI affects the authenticity and originality of art. With machines now churning out art that can mimic or sometimes outshine what humans create, I find myself considering the true spirit of creativity. It’s a bit like wondering whether a sunset painted by a robot can stir the soul as much as one painted by a human hand.

Ethical Use

The issue of how AI learns to create art is important as well. It gobbles up huge datasets of human-made artworks, often without asking permission, which raises big questions about respecting copyright and making sure artists get their due credit and compensation.

Cultural Appropriation and Bias

AI’s knack for mixing styles from across the globe without really understanding their roots or meanings also worries me. It feels like it could lead to a mishmash that misses the depth and respect cultural expressions deserve. And let’s not forget that AI doesn’t come bias-free. The prejudices baked into the data it learns from can end up reflected in the art it produces, which could keep on reinforcing stereotypes and leaving out diverse voices and faces.

Economic Impact on Artists and Creators

The rise of AI in art also begs the question about what it means for us artists. There’s an ever-present fear that AI could undercut the value of human-made art or even take over some of our jobs, altering the way we make a living from our passion.

My Personal Solutions and Ideas

Embracing Collaborative Creativity

I like to think of AI as a new kind of creative assistant. Blending my own spark of creativity with AI’s computational abilities opens up a world of possibilities, letting us dream up art that neither man nor machine could on their own.

Ethical Practices

It’s up to us as artists and creators to champion the cause for ethical AI art-making. This means pushing for clear rules about where data comes from, sticking to copyright laws, and making sure artists are recognized and rewarded for their work.

Cultivating Cultural Awareness

When I make art with AI, I try to make a point to tread carefully around cultural symbols and styles. It’s about honoring and understanding their significance, not just using them because they look cool.

Economic Artistic Advocacy

Facing economic concerns, I support exploring fresh ways to value and sell AI-assisted art. It’s important to fight for a system that sees the true worth of artists in this new AI-enhanced world.

Challenging Biases

I hope to use AI as a mirror to show and question societal biases. Creating art that highlights these issues invites everyone into a conversation about identity, representation, and how technology shapes our views.

Enhancing Accessibility

The potential of AI to open up art to everyone, including people with disabilities, really excites me. I’m diving into how AI can help create art that’s more inclusive, making sure everyone can join in the beauty and conversation.

Conclusion

Merging AI with the visual arts is like stepping into a land of discovery and reflection. By facing the concerns AI brings to the table, we can guide it to enrich our world of creativity, respect cultural richness, and welcome everyone into the art community. The path of blending AI into our artistic expressions comes with its set of hurdles, but with a dash of collaboration, a spoonful of advocacy, and a heap of ethical commitment, I’m a big supporter of making sure the art of tomorrow deepens our cultural connections in truly meaningful ways.

“Whispering Spirits” A Human-AI Collaboration (Writing 2)

Creating many iterations, revisions, changing voices and styles, I used ChatGPT as an assistant to my creativity. We partnered to create the following poem:

In the hushed murmur of the timeworn trees,
Where secrets of the cosmos softly ease,
Nature’s concert in modest garb plays,
Each leaf a tale, each bough in warm embrace.

The dawn’s orb, in splendid anthem bright,
Cloaks the sphere in hues of warmth and light.
Majestic hills, in their stately height,
Guardians of both the diurnal light and nocturnal sight.

Streams, like wanderers, cross the verdant land,
Their courses shaped by nature’s deft hand.
Within their depths, the heavens’ mirror lies,
Reflecting the quiet lament of the soul’s sighs.

The petals of blooms, in vivid array,
Speak of beauty in fearless whispers’ sway.
Each flower, a homage to life’s hallowed frame,
Linking the earth to the soul’s innermost flame.

In the stillness, a profound essence dwells,
A spirit that in the breeze and earth swells.
In the leaf’s flutter, the wind’s gentle croon,
In nature’s core, where all souls find their boon.

This fabric, with celestial threads sewn,
Displays the intricate ballet where spirit and nature are shown.
In every fleeting instant, a glimpse we may seize,
Of the unity of all, the hallowed keys.

Let this verse be a pilgrimage, a spiritual quest,
In pursuit of nature’s beauty, and within, our own breast.
For in the grace of the earth, and the celestial dome,
Resides the timeless narrative of life, spirit, and home.

Diving Into the Fusion of Art and AI with Mark Amerika (Blog 3)

As we navigate a world where the boundaries between the digital and the human are increasingly fuzzy, Mark Amerika’s deep dive into artificial creative intelligence (ACI) gives us a fascinating glimpse into what the future of creativity might hold. Through his adventures in digital remix art and experimenting with AI tools, Amerika isn’t just creating art; he’s embarking on a quest to understand what drives creativity at its core. His notable projects like “Watermarks” and his insightful book, My Life as an Artificial Creative Intelligence, shine as beacons for anyone curious about the merging paths of art and technology.

Amerika’s work shines a spotlight on the concept of the “hybrid mind,” a beautiful blend of human intuition and machine intelligence. This idea suggests a future where creativity isn’t just a human game but a collaborative effort between us and our digital creations. It’s about bridging the gap between the tangible and the algorithmic, opening doors to uncharted realms of creativity. By working with AI tools, such as GPT models, Amerika blurs the traditional roles of creator and creation, weaving together the artist’s spontaneous impulses with the machine’s calculated responses.

Rather than using AI merely as a tool, Amerika engages in a dialogue with it, positioning AI not as a helper but as a co-creator. This approach, grounded in improvisation, remixing, and teamwork, challenges old-school ideas about who gets to be called a creator and what creativity actually means. His ACI projects at the TECHNE Lab at UC Boulder, along with his writings and performances, aren’t just artistic outputs—they’re bold experiments pushing the limits of creative expression.

Amerika looks at AI through a lens of optimism, balanced with a keen sense of the ethical and practical challenges it presents. Yet, he argues that AI, especially in the hands of artists, can act as a “pharmakon”—a term that means both remedy and poison. Through their engagement with AI, artists like Amerika aren’t just exploring new creative landscapes; they’re actively shaping the direction of these technologies, aiming to boost human creativity instead of diminishing it.

Standing on the brink of this new age of hybrid creativity, Amerika’s insights serve as both a source of inspiration and a word of caution. Venturing into the realm of the hybrid mind comes with its hurdles, but it also holds the promise of redefining our perceptions of art, creativity, and what it means to be human in a tech-savvy world. The interaction between humans and AI in the sphere of creativity, as Amerika envisions, is not about competition but about a partnership that enriches our collective creative spirit.

By embracing the hybrid mind, we recognize that creativity is an evolving trait, one that can be enhanced and broadened through our interactions with AI. This realization unlocks a universe of potential for artists and creators, where the lines between the human and the machine, between reality and imagination, are constantly redrawn. Mark Amerika’s contributions serve as milestones on this journey, reminding us that creation is not just about producing art; it’s about the ongoing evolution of ourselves in response to the technologies that shape our lives.

AI creativity & personal concerns (blog 3)

When it comes to the use of AI in art or more broadly, I have mixed feelings. While I recognize AI as a tool that can enhance efficiency, I also understand the concerns surrounding its impact on job security, especially in creative fields. Many people worry that as AI improves, it will eliminate their roles, rendering humans unnecessary for many tasks that previously required human intervention. I think this especially applies to the people in creative fields because they are seeing how fast and well produced AI can generate images.

However, I believe the fear of AI partly stems from a lack of understanding about how AI operates and its potential to increase productivity and save time. The media, particularly through movies, has perpetuated a dystopian narrative that causes these fears, despite our current technological capabilities being far from those depicted on screen. My split thought towards AI arises because it can be both beneficial and detrimental. For instance, AI’s ability to replicate voices has been exploited for scams, and it has been used to generate and distribute inappropriate images online. While AI does have filters and limits, they are not completely accurate, which poses significant risks. Speaking in this perspective we have to think about the ethical dilemmas that this tool also is enabling and causing.

The debate over whether AI-generated works are considered art is a contentious issue, but it ultimately depends on our definition of art. Historically, art encompassed mediums such as painting, drawing, sculpting, and ceramics, but it has evolved to include technology. Rosson’s essay points out the parallel debate surrounding photography’s status as art. Just as photography requires a person to capture a vision, AI-generated art needs humans for idea generation. However, it get’s  complicated when it comes to copyright, since the creation process is technically performed by AI using data from others’ works.

I guess my only response to how artists or creators can address AI is instead of ignoring it or bashing it, is to learn about it and inform themselves about how it works. By learning about it they too can use it to enhance their skills or work because eventually it will be a normal tool like using a computer.
