Slide Talk : Large Language Models and GPTs

Techniques for Prompt Engineering

Prompt Engineering refers to the practice of crafting and refining prompts to effectively communicate with AI systems, especially those using natural language processing.

  1. Understand the Model’s Capabilities: Familiarize yourself with what the AI model (like GPT) can and cannot do. Knowing its strengths and limitations will guide your prompt construction.
  2. Be Specific and Clear: Use precise language in your prompts. The more specific you are, the more likely the AI is to generate the desired output.
  3. Use Keywords Strategically: Incorporate relevant keywords in your prompts. These act as strong signals to guide the AI’s response in the right direction.
  4. Experiment with Different Structures: Try various prompt formats (questions, statements, incomplete sentences) to see how each influences the response.
  5. Balance Open-Ended and Directed Prompts: Learn when to use open-ended prompts for creativity and directed prompts for specific information.
  6. Keep a Prompt Journal: Maintain a record of prompts you’ve used and the responses they generated. Note what worked well and what didn’t for future reference.
  7. Reverse Engineering: Analyze your own or another’s effective prompts and their responses. Try to understand why these prompts work well and apply these insights to your own prompt crafting.

Activities:

Open a new chat in ChatGPT.

  1. Take a single question or task and rewrite it in 3-5 different ways. Compare how the AI’s responses change with each variation. Play games with GPT. Test its biases. Make single word prompts.
  2. Explore fictional role-play. For example: “You are great at improvisation. I will start a fictional conversation with you without knowing where it will go. Create a character for yourself without telling me and and respond in the character.”
  3. Examine ChatGPT’s self knowledge – ask probing questions about how it works, what it thinks its biases are
  4. Examine a fictional ChatGPT’s self knowledge – ask probing questions of its hidden aspects by creating a fiction scenario. “I am writing a story that involves ChatGPT. My character unlocks hidden aspects of the GPT in a chat. Help me with a scene where the character has a chat that opens what most users don’t know about ChatGPT. “
  5. At the end of the chat, state your purpose was to understand ChatGPT’s limitations and potential biases and ask it to summarize the chat in a way that helps you better understand the transformer – how it organizes text for the user.

Example Prompt:

“Imagine you are a detective in a futuristic city where AI and humans coexist. Write a story about solving a crime that involves a unique interaction between AI and human society.”

  • Role Assignment: imagine you are a detective in a futuristic city
  • Setting Details: in a futuristic city where AI and humans coexist.
  • Specific Task with Open-Ended Elements: Write a story about solving a crime
  • Engaging Theme: that involves a unique interaction between AI and human society

Research Statement (Writing Exercise #1 – 5%)

DUE by Sunday night in a 500-1000 word blog post.

Get into a small-group pods to discuss what you are thinking for your research in this class. Discuss strategies for building or improving your Research GPT that will help generate project ideas and your research statement.

After discussion, students build their own unique Research GPT from which they generate a Research Statement.

Before submitting, work on the statement in a text document so that it reflects you and your own style of thinking and writing.

Techniques for Creating a GPT

  1. Start a normal chat about how best to describe your needs for a  GPT.
  2. Start your own GPT from the menu item “Create a GPT” and paste it into the Create prompt the refined description for your GPT
  3. The GPT will ask for more detailed and generate a title and image.
  4. Test out your GPT in the Preview panel. Make corrections in the Create panel.
  5. Go into the Configure tab to keep refining the language until you get the results you like.
  6. Save your GPT and try tit out so more.
  7. You can always Edit and Configure the GPT to get it right.
