Today we are kicking off the project funded by a Society of American Archivists (SAA) Catalyst grant to preserve 78 works of media art, literature, and games held at The Next that were created with Shockwave from 1997 to 2011. The preservation method will be video playthroughs, what Stuart Moulthrop and I call “Traversals,” which is a process we developed as part of the Pathfinders methodology. In essence, we will capture video recordings of the work on the computer screen and via a video camera of the person performing the work. These two videos will be edited into one by our video specialist Rylan Eisenhauer.
We are traversing approximately 10 works a week for eight weeks, starting with the few works published on CD-ROM. Here are the works we traversed on Tuesday, along with some of the more technical information relating to the hardware and software we used:
