While the main mode of transmission for the coronavirus is directly via respiratory droplets that generate when an infected person coughs or sneezes, another way the virus can also spread is via surface transmission. If an infected person coughs or sneezes on a surface or item, the virus can remain stable in place for several hours to days at a time. This is why it may be a good idea to undertake targeted hygiene practices. For instance, clothes and linen can be washed with the warmest water setting more frequently to clean and disinfect them. High touch items and surfaces could be disinfected via an alcohol solution, disinfectant wipes, or just plain soap and water. Even if remaining home all the time, it may be a good idea to carry out these precautionary measures. The lengthy incubation period of the virus means that a person in the household could be sick and unknowingly spreading the virus throughout the house.
