Evolution of Storytelling

Introduction:

With the advancement of technology, the way we consume and share information has changed exponentially over the years. One consumption and distribution of information that has changed in a dramatic way is storytelling. Long before digital technology or print technology, stories have been told through the acoustic space. Storytellers had to rely on their memory to share their stories. With the invention of written text, stories were able to be recorded making it no longer necessary for stories to be memorized. Once technology was created to reproduce text on page, stories began to take on a new form, thus the print space was born. This led to printed books being one of the more popular ways to share stories. Not long after, imagery was introduced to printed books, thus utilizing the visual space as a way to further enhance storytelling. This project will consider how information, specifically a story, presented in the acoustic space, printing space, and visual space can affect a user’s experience with that information.

Some of the questions to be considered are: How does the use of visual and audio space affect how a story is told, understood, and experienced? Does the use of technology change the meaning of a story? What are the affordances of various mediums when telling stories?
