This capstone project for DTC 201 is designed to raise awareness for our nation's current situation with infrastructure. This project focuses specifically on the aspect of transportation infrastructure, mostly dealing with public transit, roads, bridges, etc. An alarming amount of the transportation infrastructure in the United States is lacking, deteriorating, or even both. Based on various reports and observations of our current infrastructure, questions are continuously raised about our uncertain future. One of the many topics of debate regarding our infrastructure and the money (or lack thereof) that we throw at it is the amount of money in question. While some (such as the American Society of Civil Engineers) estimate that we will be in an even larger hole if we do nothing, others say that the cost of refurbishing our slowly deteriorating infrastructure will simply be too much all together.
The reason I chose this topic for this capstone project is because it is a topic that is not always discussed. Given the social/cultural implications it involves (such as people not having access to proper public transit, the effect a crumbling infrastructure will have on everyone across America, the economy in general, etc), I decided it would be an interesting perspective on the issue. At first, it seemed as though I chose one of the most boring topics possible, but through creating the video and infographic, I learned some of the intricacies of the issue, the arguments from both sides, and aimed to create a perspective that highlights the issue for what it is and the future implications it will hold for our society.
