My name is Lucas Pauly and for this project, I chose to focus on the two main styles of animation: 2D hand drawn animation and 3D computer animation. This project focuses on the history of both methods and the key differences between the both of them. The remixed video focuses on the key differences of the animation styles and the illustrated infographic shows the history of both animations, marking key events and time periods in history that developed the medium of animation.
During this project, I discovered the current state of animation. As of now, 2D animation has not been used by a major American studio in many years to create a full length, feature film. Most American studios have switched to using 3D animation with 2D being reserved for brief moments or television. Most countries outside of America still have films & entertainment that use 2D animation, with Japan's anime industry being one of the largest producers.
Key differences between the two animation styles relate to how each method is created. 2D animation typically relies on the animator drawing images by hand. Each frame of the animation will be drawn slightly differently from the next and when strung together as one clip show motion. 3D animation is created through computer software programs. These programs create 3D models for the animator to rig it to a virtual skeleton so it can be animated. This method also relies on frames being changed to show motion, but the animator can use keyframes so the program is able to fill in motion in between each keyframe.
