Chris Burden was a performance artist born in Boston in 1946 and grew up in
France and Italy. When he was 12 years old Burden was involved in a
motorcycle accident in Italy that required his foot to be operated on without
anesthesia. This traumatic event is believed be the catalyst for his future
works that focused on self-inflicted physical pain.In 1965, Burden had moved
to California to study physics and architecture before receiving his B.F.A
from Pomona College in 1969 and his M.F.A. from the University of California
at Irvine in 1971,where one of his teachers had been the artist Robert Irwin.
Burden began his performance pieces while still in college, and his master's
thesis was Burden consisting of him shutting himself in a locker for five days
without food, only with a five-gallon jug of water above him and an empty
five-gallon jug below him for waste. Burden was excited about the idea that
his body and his actions could be considered a work of art with little or no
other materials involved. This early performance set the tone for the types of
works Burden would become famous. His pieces were usually done in front of a
small audience who had heard of the event by word-of-mouth; as Burden did not
advertise in advance of his performances. Chris Burden passed away on May 10th
2015.
Work
Chris Burden's work where focused on his works of self-inflicted physical pain
for the majority of his career, when he branches out it often focused on his
sence of humor or his architectural nature. Burden's most famous works include
"Shoot" (1971),"Through the Night Softly" (1973),"Trans-Fixed" (1974),"Doomed" (1975),
"The Flying Steamroller" (1996),and "Metropolis II" (2011). This plays out in
"The Flying Steamroller" as Steamrollers do not fly but Burden made this fly in
a circle once every hour, or one of the works Burden has become known for is
his "Buddha’s Fingers" the installation of 202 lamp posts, which stands at the
entrance to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
My thoughts
Burden's works into his self-inflicted physical pain has manifested in many
of his works like Shoot where he has his friend shoot him in the arm with a
22, Through the Night Softly where Burden moved across broken glass in his
underwear with his hands bound behind his back.Transfixion where Burden
affected himself to a Volkswagen via nails through the palms of his hands.
After he was nailed to the car it was rolled out of a garage and displayed
to an audience. The engine was revved at full throttle to represent the sound
of screaming in pain. All these works seem to me to be a release for him as he
need to as like a cutter needs to cut themself for a release. The idea for me
is that he is physical harming himself for his work. maybe there was some sort
of psychological thing driving him do that work along with the looming of
the war.
