Authoring Project

I chose to do #3 of the authoring project, which was to create a video and sound remix of a game environment. The game I did this on was Madden 2013. I chose this because its constantly played at my house. Every night, it’s always a football game to end the day with. The process of making this video was really hard. I found it hard being that I had to view tutorials on how to cut video clips and crop audio. When I applied it to the video, it was confusing because I had to know when to cut the videos short or take out whole clips. The point I was trying to get across was that putting together electronically could’ve been just as hard manually. I had to record, upload, record, upload, etc. The images or the quality of the image wasn’t as HD as I wanted it and on iMovie, a program I used to put it together, was so difficult to function, being that I had one of the oldest MacBooks to use. The learning outcomes of this project was basically using ancient laptops to do modern work. It was hard for me to record on one thing & upload on another. I think it might have been easier if I used video clips online, but then again, it would’ve been hard to do so anyway. Not all websites are free where you can download mp4.

I didn’t know what to do my project on at first I just I knew I wanted to do a video. The first thing that popped into my mind was super Mario. My favorite Mario game is Mario kart so I decided to do it on Mario kart Wii and compare it to Mario kart 64. The sound and music that I chose were from Mario kart 64 and Mario kart Wii. I purposely chose these sounds and music to see if you can tell which music is from Mario kart 64 and Mario kart Wii. I also chose those specific race tracks because they are most common race tracks that we play or see specially the rainbow road. The point I was trying to get across was how much this game has changed throughout the years. I’ve played both Mario kart Wii and Mario kart 64 and I’ve seen many differences from the music to weapons, to characters, to the road tracks. That’s what I was trying to show in my video. Throughout producing my work I have learned that Mario kart has changed a lot and is that is still a popular game today and it will continue to change and kids will continue to play Mario kart.

The idea for this project came from my friend and me messing around with our Mortal Kombat characters. We would be listening to music while we played the game and make our characters jump to the music. I thought it would be fun idea. To record the game play, I routed the RCA cable from the Nintendo 64 through an RCA splitter and then into a camcorder. Then I turned on some techno music and my friend and I moved our characters to the music to resemble dancing. I then took the good footage and uploaded it to Windows Movie Maker and added the music. The point I am making is that music can drastically affect the vibe you get from a video game. If you’ve played Mortal Kombat, you know that dancing is the polar opposite of the point of the game. A normally dark and violent game can be turned into a humorous dance party by simply adding the right music and moving your character to the beat. Through the process of creating this video, the subjects of “fair use” and “copyright” were on my mind. I would be questioning myself if what I was producing was copyright infringement or fair use.  I learned that my video was indeed fair use because it does not have an “affect on the value of copyrighted work” (copyright). I used footage from Mortal Kombat for reasons of tribute because it is one of my favorite games. I also learned a lot about Windows Movie Maker.
