When McLuhan states that ‘Medieval language and literature were somewhat in the state of the present movie or TV show.’ he means that the text is meant to be heard with the ears and enjoyed with the eye and presented with soul and not just simply read without intention. There was a line about the word ‘Textura’ which meant ‘tapestry’ that really caught my attention which made me think about the relation between those two words. Tapestries were typically like murals made of fabric or thread, murals are meant to be looked at and observed visually instead of read. The same thing goes for tapestries being retellings of legends, myths or real battles that are from certain kingdoms. Posters are meant to be the same way since not everyone has the time to read something that seems interesting but is just a bunch of text. These arts are meant to draw the eyes through the imagery on the work instead of focusing on text if there is any at all. Picture books are another example of this kind of storytelling because they have pictures with minimal text and even if there is no text at all the story can still be displayed and understood. There was one book that was brought in with a girl and a shiny golden rock she found while on holiday. The story itself shows the girl and her family at the start saying goodbye to their dog and then shows the life of the golden stone she ends up finding which has a dog in every or almost every scene change throughout the pages. There are no words in the entire thing besides the cover pages but after that it is just pictures, the story is still clear so it shows the author’s skill at conveying something without the assistance of words.
