WEEK 6: Compositing & Effects (February 26)

To Do This Week

Read: What is Digital Cinema?, by Lev Manovich

Watch/Explore:

Blog: After reading Lev Manovich’s “What is Digital Cinema”, discuss the digital aesthetics of one or two works listed above. What kind of hybrid spaces are depicted in these videos with altered-pixels breaking the illusion of cinema space? How is the “indexicality” of traditional cinema (it truthfulness in capturing images of bodies in a three-dimensional world) manipulated or challenged? What kind of cinema spaces are these? Do they inspire you to create your own cinema that alters or distorts the capture image? Please quote Manovich in your reflections.

Notes

COLLAGE > REMIX

New ways to depict space – multiple, discontinuous, mixed media
– newspaper and paint
– photography and drawing
– text and image

Guitar, 1913 by Pablo Picasso

CINEMA PAINTING

Painting directly onto the film.

MATTE / COMPOSITING EFFECTS

combining two or more images into a single, final image by masking certain areas of the film emulsion to selectively control which areas are exposed. sometimes paintings are added to backgrounds through matte techniques

Digital Compositing Effects

combining images by replacing colored pixel areas  usually in order to create the illusion of a single image

– multiple layers of video
– effects (pixels as information)
– green screen – swap pixel colors
– the pixel grid
– enhance image with AI

New Media (HTML) – each piece of media is discrete, not a composite

Machine Learning

Google’s Deep Dream software– machine learning

Compositing 5% DUE March 12th (two weeks)

Create a 30-60 second video that explores a screen space made of multiple layers of video, audio, text and/or graphic imagery. There are many techniques you can combine to create a collages of video elements: compositing (layering of video tracks), green screen, video effects, spatial montage, etc. The only rule is you must  incorporate the “indexicality” of video (your own or remixed from other sources).

    • collage > remix
    • screen > interface
    • text > titles, subtitles
    • effects >  glitch, green screen, color correction, mask, picture in picture
    • downloading YouTube videos, screen capture
    • mobile cinema – Cardiff
    • augmented, layered space and time
    • green screen
