The Dickinson Composites is an artist book that focuses on a series of large-scale quilts Jen Bervin made by embroidering the poet Emily Dickinson’s unusual punctuation markings from her fascicles.  In an essay by Bervin elucidates Dickinson’s variant marking system in her poetry manuscripts and provides further context for the quilts.

Altered book by John Eric Broaddus, includes paintings, drawings, collaged images, handwritten notes, cut-outs and cut-outs allowing for portion of other text on a different page to be read.  The original text, Current glossary by R.W. Cowden, was published by the Educators Association in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1917.

5.  Chen, Julie.
True to life.  Berkeley : Flying Fish Press, 2004.

The image that appears on each page is one section of a long, continuous visual timeline that can never be viewed all at once. The front is made of a Plexiglas panel through which book pages are viewed. Along the sides of the book are numbered wooden levers corresponding to the leaf of the book to be revealed. Levers are slid, moving 7 panels on the page surface, overlaying one page upon the next, creating “a patchwork narrative of events.” Each leaf contains images and text.

The commentary is “a parallel text embedded in the images; a poetic gloss deriving … from W.H. Mallock’s A Human Document, a Victorian novel that is here plundered …for possible insights into Dante’s thought.”

7.  Davidson, Laura.
Random thoughts on hope.  [Boston]: Laura Davidson, 2003.

A wooden volvelle inside a wooden box.  The volvelle is 4 concentric circles with the word “hope” at the center. The next circle contains 8 prepositions, and the next 32 nouns.  When the volvelle is moved the words combine to create phrases.  The box lid has a key in the center, with small gears instead of a handle.

In the words of Johanna Drucker, “this book has the look of some manic, encyclopedic new age Sears and Roebuck mail order catalogue of all the elements that ever existed in the course of organic history and human memory.”  The subtitle says it all:  “Scars, tattoos, and forgotten instructions – everything at once”  Everything is here – body parts, coffee stains, clumsy watercolor, cryptic hand, latex, rambling thoughts, gestures collage….
