Artists’ Statement:
Inanimate Alice began life in 2005 as a collaboration between Kate Pullinger, Chris Joseph and producer Ian Harper. It has since gone on to become a hugely popular title with readers and educators around the world. In 2010 the creative team expanded to include Andy Campbell who designed and built the fifth episode of the series. One of the first digital media stories to combine games and narrative, Inanimate Alice tells the story of Alice, growing up in the near-future, as she moves around the world with her family. 2016 has seen the launch of Episode Six: The Last Gas Station, a 3D storyworld, as well as a series of additions to the tools the team creates for educators, including a downloadable package of teachers’ versions of the first five episodes.Future projects within the storyworld of Inanimate Alice include a series of five interactive novels created in collaboration with Australian digital innovator Mez Breeze.
Bios:
Andy Campbell is the Director of Digital Media for UK arts organisation One to One Development Trust onetoonedevelopment.org whose digital fiction project Dreaming Methods has been online since 1999. Dreaming Methods dreamingmethods.com currently houses over 30 works of collaborative electronic literature and experimental narrative games including WALLPAPER with Judi Alston and Inanimate Alice with Kate Pullinger and Chris Joseph for which Campbell is the Lead Developer. In 2015 his work with Mez Breeze on the transmedia narrative Pluto won the Tumblr International Prize for digital art and The Space Open Call Competition.
Chris Joseph (chrisjoseph.org) is a British/Canadian writer and artist. The ‘Inanimate Alice’ series is one of several collaborations with Kate Pullinger, including ‘The Breathing Wall’ – a novel that responds to the reader’s rate of breathing – and the collaborative fiction ‘Flight Paths’. He is founder and editor of the post-Dada magazine and artist network 391.org.
Kate Pullinger writes novels and digital fiction. Her most recent novel is Landing Gear (2014); her novel The Mistress of Nothing won Canada’s Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction in 2009. Pullinger’s many digital fiction projects include her multiple award-winning digital story for children, Inanimate Alice – www.inanimatealice.com – created with Chris Joseph and Andy Campbell, and Flight Paths – www.flightpaths.net, created with Chris Joseph. In 2014 Pullinger collaborated with novelist and theatre-maker Neil Bartlett to create the digital war memorial, Letter to an Unknown Soldier -www.1418now.org.uk/letter/ Pullinger is Professor of Creative Writing and Digital Media at Bath Spa University, England. Ian Harper is the Producer of the Inanimate Alice series. At the tender age of 50, he attended the UK’s National Film and Television School to learn how to write for the screen. Working with a lecturer in screenwriting as editor, a script was developed that provided the characters, premise and motivation for the creation of the online series. Ian continues to explore opportunities to further expand Alice’s seemingly endless world-travelling adventures and is currently working with a team of Masters Students on an Industry Project at the Centre for Digital Media in Vancouver.
