Will Luers, Hazel Smith, & Roger Dean

Artists’ Statement:
Novelling is a generative interface that renders a semiotic arrangement of sound, image and text.  Readerly and cinematic, narrative and poetic, its sequential structure is variable. It unfolds without a strongly delineated plot, character or narrative structure and yet is suggestive of “novelistic” spaces. These are spaces of interior reflection and exterior gestures, intimacy and estrangement, things said and unsaid, action and desire, reading, writing and looking.Continuing an exploration of generative multimedia and potential narratives, this third collaboration of Will Luers, Hazel Smith and Roger Dean, takes up the subject of the novel as a virtual space of co-mingling subjects and settings.

Bios:
Will Luers is a media artist and professor in the Creative Media & Digital Culture program at Washington State University Vancouver where he teaches multimedia authoring, creative programming and digital cinema. His videos and web-based projects have been exhibited internationally at film and video festivals and selected for various digital arts events, including the Electronic Literature Organization (ELO), Electronic Language International Festival (FILE, in Brazil) and International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA). In 2010, he was awarded the Vectors-NEH Summer Fellowship to work on his database video documentary, The Father Divine Project. http://will-luers.com

Hazel Smith is a Research Professor in the Writing and Society Research Centre at Western Sydney University, and is the author of several academic and pedagogical books including The Writing Experiment: strategies for innovative creative writing, Allen and Unwin, 2005 and The Contemporary Literature-Music Relationship: intermedia, voice, technology, cross-cultural exchange, Routledge, 2016. She is co-editor with Roger Dean of Practice-led Research, Research-led Practice in the Creative Arts, Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh, 2009. Hazel is a poet, performer and multimedia artist, and is a member of austraLYSIS, the sound and intermedia arts group. She has published four volumes of poetry, including most recently Word Migrants, Giramondo Publishing, Sydney, 2016.  She has produced three CDs of poetry and performance work and numerous collaborative multimedia works.  Her website is at www.australysis.com.

Roger Dean is a composer/improviser, and since 2007 a research professor in music cognition and computation at the MARCS Institute, Western Sydney University. He founded and directs the ensemble austraLYSIS, which has performed in 30 countries. He has performed as bassist, pianist, piano accompanist and laptop computer artist in many other contexts, including the Academy of Ancient Music, London Sinfonietta, Graham Collier Music (leading European jazz group), and the Australian Chamber Orchestra; and accompanying singers Marian Montgomery and Gerald English. His creative work is on more than 50 CDs, and in numerous digital intermedia and installation pieces. His current research is on perception of affect in music, the role of acoustic intensity and timbre, and rhythm generation and perception. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed research articles in international journals. Previously he was foundation CEO of the Heart Research Institute, Sydney, researching in biochemistry, and then Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Canberra.
