I worked as a 2D animator and illustrator for the VR game DATA ENTRY: PORTAL. This was an adaptation of Rob Swigart’s 1986 game and 1988 book. I worked in a team to create a production line to take concept art inspired by Swigart's previous work and turn it into completely realized animations. This production line had me working alongside other animators, designers and the game developers to ensure that the assets I produced were in theme with the rest of the project and could be properly implemented within the game environment. I would review a storyboard, identify the moving subject within, create the puppet and then send it to someone else to be animated. This meant that I had to be consistent and clear with both my file and layer naming to make it easy for someone else to use my asset.
The images above are from the production of a single animation within the game. The ship (Agni) is traveling through the Mariana Trench. The first image is a storyboard I drew and annotated. Then there is the Illustrator puppet I made of the Agni that was later animated in After Effects. The first film is the final product of this animation, followed by a recording of the same animation within the VR environment.
